Is there not enough space in the children's room for separate cots? Assemble a children's wooden bunk bed with your own hands. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, and will show you the algorithm for making such a bed with your own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or teenagers can also be made from metal, but not everyone will have a neat welded structure, and appearance Such sleeping places are not too childish. Therefore, we will consider making beds from wood and lumber, since these are inexpensive and easy-to-work materials, warm, beautiful and homely.

Bed frame materials

Scroll wood materials, from which you can make a bed, is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and quite difficult to prepare and manufacture if you do not have experience working with it. Experience is important here. Although products made from solid wood are the most beautiful and durable, they still don’t use a children’s bed for very long - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed boards, timber - the most common and easy-to-work materials, provided that you are confident in proper drying, otherwise the supporting structure may “lead”.

3. MDF - wood fiber board. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling, it generates dust without forming chips. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. Can be ordered individual elements beds in a furniture shop or sawing shop: everything will be carefully cut out and the edges will be glued on.

4. Chipboard - particle board. Formaldehyde emissions are increased without a sealed coating, excluding class E1 slabs. Easy to saw, but does not hold screws well. Suitable for unloaded parts, such as drawers mounted under the bottom of the bed. Backrests can be made from laminated chipboard (laminated chipboard), decorative panels— the film coating prevents formaldehyde from evaporating, but it is important that the ends of the slabs are covered with film.

5. Furniture board - a slab glued together from individual blocks natural wood. Beautiful, durable, even allows you to carve, but requires skill in operation, as it has internal stresses that must be taken into account.

When purchasing fittings, you should give preference to steel hardware. Aluminum ones are much less durable and rigid.

Methods for connecting wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various connections horizontally, vertically, and the formation of corners. This can be done different ways. We present some of them for your reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - “claw” connection

1 - complete cutting; 2—cutting is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection with rectangular keys; 2 - connection with keys " dovetail"; 3 - connection to the main tenon

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can have different designs and be decorated in a variety of ways. So, the upper tier can be located exactly above the lower one, offset, leaving space for a cabinet, or perpendicular to it. The staircase may consist of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged lids on drawers. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the lower mattress. To do this you will need guides - runners. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or sports equipment.

Below are drawings of some beds with basic dimensions.

And now a few design ideas that can inspire you to create an original bunk bed. Please note how some models use absolutely “waste” materials - slabs, branches, trunks, driftwood.

Method for making a bunk bed

Some of the most inexpensive materials are pine boards and timber. It is from them that we will make bunk bed.

Material calculation

When making a bed, you need to keep in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, so the distance to the bottom of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of sleeping places in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you make your own mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a thick fabric cover, then the dimensions are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below shows the individual elements of the bed, and the table shows the purpose, dimensions and number of pieces.

Assembly units

A bed is furniture consisting of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single unit. Identical parts can be cut by holding them together with a vice or clamp, so they will turn out absolutely identical. Before assembly, you need to make sure that everything wooden parts cleaned, smooth and free of burrs. It is better to work with a special wood sander or grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-like elements. The difference is that the fence rails are built into the footboard as shown in the pictures below.

Installation order: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the stand and backrest slats are drilled simultaneously; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, you will need four prepared boards - the longitudinal components of the frame. To ensure the reliability of the structure, the longitudinal strip must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the thickness of the board. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal support strip of the mattress, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is simply a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a cut for mounting on the frame. Places for fastening the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the frame screws.

1 — cutouts 38 mm; 2 — places of fastening of steps; 3 — stair steps, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Frame assembly

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the boards of the supporting frame using screws. After this, the transverse slats and mattress holders are laid, and the outermost ones are filed in the corners for tight installation. There is no need to secure them. The second tier is assembled in the same way.

5. Assembling stairs and railings

The stairs and railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made on the side of the wall - for the lower and upper beds. Then you will need four more planks.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

IN modern apartments Rooms vary significantly in size, so the choice for a nursery is often not the largest room. The best option to increase the free space, a do-it-yourself bunk bed, drawings and diagrams of which will be presented below. The only drawback of this option is the age of the child, since during adolescence he will be uncomfortable on the second floor. By replacing the bottom bed with a sofa, you can create comfortable conditions for sleep even for an older child.

Stages of work

How to make a bunk bed yourself? This question is asked by everyone who has decided to correct the problem with the lack of sleeping space in the children's room. Let's try to consider the stages of making a bunk bed at home. Step-by-step instruction will help you complete such work without outside help.

The manufacturing process looks like this:

  • the first thing you need to do is choose a bed model;
  • draw up a drawing and diagram;
  • purchase materials and prepare tools;
  • prepare parts based on the drawing required sizes;
  • assemble the main frame;
  • make the back, side walls, stairs, legs;
  • assemble the overall structure.

During design and development, drawings of the bed are prepared. Particular attention is paid to the safety of the entire structure as a whole: strong frame, reliable side walls (fences), easy stair climb.

Drawings and diagrams

All work requires care and precision, so each stage is accompanied by a drawing. It is prepared not just for one, but for all parts. The exact dimensions of the parts, height, thickness will help you get the result that the master strives for.

What is indicated on the drawing:

  • dimensions of the final structure;
  • assembly diagram of individual parts;
  • methods of connecting nodes;
  • installation procedure for each part;
  • dimensions of structural parts and fastening elements.

Materials

When making a bunk bed at home, you need to choose the right material. Experts recommend paying attention to the following types:

  • array - from which beautiful, strong and durable structures are obtained. But working with it requires construction skills and abilities;
  • lumber - which must be selected from high-quality dried specimens. Raw wood will not retain its shape, it will begin to move away, and cracks may appear;
  • MDF is a modern analogue of ordinary wood. The products look attractive and stylish. Can choose laminated boards from MDF. There is an option for a regular untreated slab, then it is finished finished with stain and varnish. If parts of the bed are ordered from a furniture factory, then specialists will process the edges with a special finish. The furniture will be neat, no different from the factory one;
  • Chipboard (chipboard) is a material that is not suitable for all parts of the bed. You can use it to make drawers under the base of the frame, back, or panel. It is important to consider covering the ends of the parts with film;
  • furniture board- consisting of pieces glued together into a single whole. Natural wood not just beautiful, it allows you to make carvings, perform other ornaments, and embody interesting design solutions. Only a craftsman with carpentry skills can work with furniture panels.

Tools

Making two-tier furniture for children is not difficult if you prepare everything necessary tools and recall existing construction skills. Of course, it’s good if the master has already made something from wood and knows how to work with it.

To work you will need:

  • saw - hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • plane or grinder;
  • knives;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • sandpaper;
  • drill.

We need instruments and devices for measuring and fixing. You can't do your work without a simple pencil.

Frame

Making the frame begins with measuring the mattress. The base and its shape correspond to the selected size of the child's bed. If the design is with a sofa, the lower part of the seat is measured.

Frame manufacturing process:

  • the box connects to the sofa at the bottom;
  • boards are prepared (long and end), which are assembled into a rectangle. They can be compared to a box. There will be two such boxes according to the number of tiers;

Making a frame for the first and second floors
  • the sofa fits into a box;
  • To connect the box to the sofa, side supports are prepared. These are two bars standing vertically. They are held together by smaller bars. There should also be two supports. One rectangle for one side wall, another for the second;

This way the frame is attached to the supports
  • the assembled frame is pulled together and secured.

Attaching bars to support the frame during assembly
Attaching spacer blocks

The fastening of the boards is done in a convenient way: eyes, spikes. Before fastening, they are lubricated with wood glue. The elements are connected firmly so that there is no possibility of any part of the frame weakening during operation. The resulting structure is dried. A photo of a bunk bed with a sofa is presented below.

If finger joint difficult for the master, then self-tapping screws can be used. The main thing is to think about closing them with outside so that there is no possibility of getting abrasions and scratches. The fastening is reinforced with metal corners.

Back

Backrests come in different types; this can be a slatted version, when slats are added to the frame of the lower and upper parts. They will hold all the furniture and protect from constant contact with the walls of the room. Often the back of the lower tier is made soft. Then sleeping area the bottom can be compared to a sofa.

In this version, for the back you will need:

  • furniture board, or boards pressed tightly against each other;
  • a solid wall that will limit the bed from contact with the wall.

The prepared boards (board, slats) are attached to the back of the frame. For reliability, attach the bed to the wall by connecting the backrest to the wall with metal corners. At simple version The design of the back of the bed does not matter. It is only needed to highlight each tier and limit it to the frame. This can be one slat on three sides of the bed. Photos from various options the backrests are presented below.

Side walls

In construction terminology, the side walls are called the headboard and backrest. These are two elements similar friend on top of each other, with the only difference being that railings are inserted into the back, and the headboard remains solid. Sometimes both parts are ordered from workshops, then all you have to do is attach them to the frame. The side walls can be made solid for two floors.

For the headboard take:

  • two sanded boards, one slightly wider than the other;
  • 4 side slats.

Side wall mounting:

  • the boards for the headboard are inserted into the slats on the sides. The second rail will be needed to fasten the walls with other parts;
  • the back and headboard are connected;
  • a lattice, lamella or mesh is made to support the mattress;

Laying slats on the top bottom
  • the lath is nailed to inside frame to strengthen the strength. It is recommended to make at least one partition for the mattress, which will add rigidity;

Bars for supporting the slatted bottom
  • a frame is prepared for the slats; it is located along the inner plane of the bed;
  • a rail is placed on the frame, approximate step 5-7 cm.

All external ribs need to be chamfered (6x6 mm). This can be done using a hand plow.

For the back you will also need two boards and four slats. But the arrangement of the boards here needs to be changed: a wide board should be installed at the bottom, a narrow board at the top. Height wide board The backrest is the same size as the narrow board of the headboard.

Ladder

Any children's two-story structure requires the installation of a ladder. A three-step staircase is considered traditional, but depending on the height of the bed there may be more steps. The drawings will tell you the dimensions, height of the stairs, step width and methods of fastening.

Depending on the type of ladder fastening, there are:

  • vertical - tightly attached to the frame;
  • inclined - located at an angle.

Staircase manufacturing process:

Preparation for future stages
  • two beams are installed, which will be the bases of the stairs - guides;
  • then the steps are fixed. The bottom step is connected to the backrest post, and the rest are located exactly one above the other. The steps are inserted into the bars.

Ways to connect steps:

  • external;
  • into the recess;
  • on metal corners.

Please note that any fastening must be closed. This will ensure the child’s use of the bed and protect the entire structure. If the furniture includes a sofa, it is better to make the stairs with wider steps. Then a wide beam is taken, and the steps are cut from the inside. If the steps are secured with bolts, then the longest bolts are selected for the top step.

The stairs need a handrail for the baby to hold on to. Railing drawings are always given along with a description of the staircase installation. The railing is regular board, designed to fit a child's hand, with a recess for mounting on the frame.

The ends act as stairs

Legs

Legs may be different heights and shapes. It all depends on the design of the bed that the master prepares.

They are secured in several ways:

  • from the inside;
  • outside;
  • inserted into the frame.

To strengthen the frame, a fifth leg is added. In practice, the following types of legs are considered the most popular:

  • square;
  • round;
  • carved.

The dimensions of the legs are calculated to obtain reliability and strength for children. The drawings give precise descriptions of their assembly. But their appearance is very important, they change the entire style of furniture.

Leg making process:

  • To work, take the bars and connect them two at a time. The approximate thickness of the bars is 50–100 ml;
  • When connecting along the length, you should get an L-shaped end. The length of the leg is equal to the height of the second tier fence.

Making L-shaped legs

A self-made bunk bed will become comfortable furniture, which freed up space in the nursery. She will become an indicator skillful hands father, children's pride. If it is a model with a sofa, then it will not only become cozy place rest, but will save the family budget for other necessary expenses.

The main area in the children's room is occupied by beds. As children grow older, there is a shortage of free space in the room. A DIY bunk bed will help solve this problem. There are many design models that are selected based on the age of the children, the size of the room and personal preferences. You can learn more about the types of bunk beds and options for making them yourself in this article.

A bunk bed will help solve the problem of lack of free space in the room.

When designing a bunk bed made of wood or metal Special attention attention should be paid to the strength and stability of the structure. Here it is necessary not only to create comfortable sleeping places, but also to properly organize the stairs to climb to the second floor. On initial stage design requires thinking about where the staircase will be located. Next, the sleeping places are calculated and the distance between the tiers is calculated. These values are determined in such a way as to guarantee convenient operation of the structure in the future.

The distance from the lower tier to the floor level is selected based on a calculation that allows for comfortable seating for an adult. The niche that will be formed under the lower tier can be filled with drawers for linen or other things. The height distance between the beds should allow an adult to sit comfortably. This requirement is met not only for the convenience of parents, but also for the safety of the child sleeping on the lower tier, who should not hit his head on the upper bed when jumping up.

The top tier should not be placed too high. This will be dangerous for a sleeping child. He will also feel uncomfortable because the room above will be too warm for him to feel very stuffy.

The optimal dimensions of a sleeping place are considered to be the following: 160x70 cm and 180x80 cm. The recommended height of the structure is 160-180 cm. The height of the sides of the second tier should be at least 35 cm, which depends on the thickness of the mattress. The most acceptable dimensions for a staircase are width 39 cm, height 150 cm, distance between steps 25 cm.

Types of bunk beds: photos of interesting options

The option of a 2-story bed is selected depending on the purpose, age of the children and their personal preferences. A younger child usually sleeps on the bottom bunk, while his older brother or sister occupies the top bunk. The two-tier design can also be used for one child. In this case, the sleeping area is located at the top. Underneath there is space for games, activities, or a convenient storage system.

There are the following types of two-level beds:

  • traditional model;
  • bed with sofa;
  • design with a retractable tier;
  • loft type bed.

A traditional DIY wooden bunk bed is the simplest design that can be made by any craftsman with minimal woodworking skills. For this model you will need a small amount of component materials. This design can be prefabricated or solid. In the first case, the upper berth, when installed on the floor, turns into a regular bed.

The second type of bunk bed is represented by a design with a folding sofa in its lower part. This is a very comfortable and unusual model that allows you to organize a comfortable seating area and a place for receiving guests, which is done with the help of a soft backrest. In this case, you will not need to purchase additional chairs for the room.

Helpful advice! On folding sofa same-sex children can sleep, and the older child can sleep on the top floor.

An attic bed is convenient for a small room. The design consists of a berth, which is located on the upper tier, and working area, placed below it. A retractable desk, bedside tables and cabinets. You can also leave the lower space free by arranging a play area there.

For a large family with four or more children, you can organize a two-tier set consisting of two or more identical sections. Despite the fact that such a design will require significant more material, sleeping places can be neatly placed along one of the walls of the room, thereby saving free space.

Pull-out wooden bunk beds: photo examples

The design with a retractable tier can be presented in several versions. In a do-it-yourself extendable bunk bed made of chipboard, the tiers are securely fastened together. In such a transforming bed, the lower tier with a sleeping place extends forward, to the right or to the left. This design It is made with a height of 60-80 cm. The product can be a traditional two-level model with a ladder, in which another berth is pulled out under the lower bed.

The roll-out model has separate sleeping places. The lower tier is not attached to the upper one, so it can be rolled out and installed anywhere in the room. The result is two separate beds.

The most functional is the option, which are located under the lower tier. This model is successfully implemented in roll-out designs. An interesting variety is a sliding double bed, in which the sleeping place is hidden in a niche during the day, and in the evening it is pulled out for further use.

There is most compact version, when there are two pull-out berths under the upper bed. When unfolded, this design resembles steps. This model will allow you to save a lot usable space, which can be used for games during the day. In addition, the cost of this triple bed will be much lower than total amount, spent on the purchase of individual stationary options.

Helpful advice! For the lower tier, it is recommended to purchase a thick mattress to fully insulate the sleeping area.

The model with a podium from which the beds extend out looks original and unusual. The podium can become a specific area of the room where you can organize a place for games or study. It is recommended to place cabinets for toys, linen and other things at the base. However, it is advisable to install such a design in rooms with high ceilings.

Another newfangled option is a grow-out bed, in which the sleeping places can be transformed, increasing in length. This feature models are used as the child grows older.

What materials can a bunk bed be made from?

To make a bed, you can use natural wood, metal or wood-containing materials. The most durable of all options is metal. To make a bed, straight-seam thin-walled pipes, round bars or wire made of brass, iron, galvanized metal or carbon steel can be used.

Finished products have an aesthetic appearance and can withstand heavy weight. The disadvantages of the material include labor-intensive process manufacturing, requiring application welding machine, And high cost designs.

Solid wood is difficult to process and expensive material. When working with it, you must have good skills in working with wood so as not to damage the products. However, the result is a solid wood bunk bed that is strong, reliable, durable and presentable.

Planed or edged boards are often used for the manufacture of structures, since this is the most economical and easiest to implement option. If designed correctly, such a structure can even support an adult.

Important! To create a strong and stable structure, it is important to purchase a well-dried board that will not subsequently deform.

An affordable option is MDF. Bunk beds from of this material They turn out beautiful and durable. However, an MDF product may break under heavy loads. This material is advisable to use for beds intended for small children, and you can also make backrests, drawers, shelves or decorative panels from it. For the same purposes, laminated chipboard is suitable, which also does not have a large load-bearing capacity.

Important! If laminated chipboard is used to create a bed frame or sleeping place, a sufficient number of supporting elements should be provided.

Furniture board is a durable, strong and reliable material. It is represented by a slab that is glued together from different blocks of natural wood. This perfect material for the manufacture of bunk beds, since it has a high load-bearing capacity. When working with a slab, it should be taken into account that it has internal tension.

How to choose the right staircase and bed side option

When making a two-story bed, due attention should be paid to the sides and stairs. These elements are designed to ensure the necessary safety of the child. There are several options for stairs, which is shown in the photo of do-it-yourself bunk beds. A flat vertical structure is mounted on one side of the facade. At the same time, it acts as a protective side for the lower tier. This staircase has no railings and is therefore unsafe for small child. More suitable for children 5-6 years old.

A flat inclined or curved forward structure can be installed on the side of the bed or in front of its front wall. The element is equipped with safety railings and has flat steps that are comfortable and safe for the child. This option can be used for children of any age.

A staircase with steps made from drawers is multifunctional and easy to use. This design is most often used for, since it requires significant space. Its recommended length is at least 2.4 m.

The sides of the bed provide protection for the child from falling while sleeping. Their height can be 30-60 cm. The sides are made in the form of a lattice or a solid canvas.

DIY bunk bed: preparatory stage

When creating a design, accuracy and precision in work are required. Therefore, at the initial stage of product manufacturing, it is necessary to make detailed drawing bunk bed, where its dimensions and components are indicated. For each individual node, an individual diagram with printed exact dimensions all its components. On general drawing displays a diagram of the assembly of a bunk bed and how to connect all its parts.

The basis for design calculations is taken. The size of the bed must strictly correspond to its dimensions. A perimeter allowance of 1 cm is allowed. The width of the backs of the structure must correspond to the width of the couch, taking into account the thickness of the longitudinal slats and the size of the overhang. This calculation is carried out for wooden structures. Concerning metal products, then the double thickness of the pipe is added to the width of the bed, taking into account an allowance of 1 cm. The size of the longitudinal slats corresponds to the length of the mattress with an allowance of 1 cm.

After the model has been determined, the manufacturing material has been selected and all necessary diagrams and do-it-yourself bunk bed drawings, you should start making the component elements. To perform the work, you need to prepare tools.

If it is made of metal, you will need:

  • grinder for cutting metal products;
  • welding machine;
  • drill with a drill for working on metal with a diameter of 9 mm;
  • roulette;
  • square file;
  • metal square;
  • sandpaper;
  • metal brush;
  • paint brush.

To create solid wood bunk beds you will need;

  • milling machine;
  • grinder or plane;
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • sandpaper;
  • roulette;
  • level.

Iron bunk bed manufacturing technology

To make a metal bunk bed with your own hands you will need metallic profile 50x25 for creating frames for sleeping places, a profile with a section of 20x25 for making a slatted base for a mattress and metal elements with a section of 40x40 mm for the side racks. You will also need to purchase metal screws, screws, primer and paint for metal surfaces.

Based on the drawing of a children's bunk bed, you cut all the blanks to a given length with your own hands. Assembly of the structure begins with the creation of backrests in the amount of 4 pieces. The structural elements must be laid out on a horizontal surface and connected with a welding seam. After each step, it is recommended to check the angle, which should be 90 degrees.

Using a grinder from profile pipe 20x25 mm slats are cut for the mattress. Next, the base is assembled. On long frame parts, 12 metal strips are welded at equal distances from each other. Then it is necessary to connect the vertical posts in pairs, to which the backs of the lower and upper tiers are attached by welding. The result is two designs.

A frame for the mattress of the lower tier is welded to the first one at a distance of 35 cm from the floor, and for top floor– at a distance of 95 cm from the lower level. All actions are carried out according to the drawing of a children's bed with your own hands.

In the places where the frames of the second rack are attached, it is necessary to weld two sections of a profile measuring 20x20 mm. They should be installed with some clearance, since the elements must fit tightly into the inner part of the profile measuring 50x25 mm. This technique will allow the structure to be transported in the future without losing the strength and rigidity of the connections.

The final stage is the manufacture of a staircase 36 cm wide. Using a grinder, all the component elements are cut from a profile pipe and welded together. The structure is attached to the bed using self-tapping screws.

After the bunk bed is assembled, all seams are sanded, the surface is cleaned of dust and the base is primed special composition. After it has completely dried, metal paint is applied to the structure in two layers.

How to make a bunk bed with your own hands from wood

A DIY wooden bunk bed is comfortable classic model, which is very popular. To make it, you need to purchase high-quality, straight, well-dried wooden blocks, from which parts of the required sizes are cut. The most commonly used boards are pine. Their number is determined based on a detailed drawing of a do-it-yourself wooden bunk bed.

Helpful advice! Consumables should be purchased with a reserve so as not to use rejected sections of the board.

For the traditional model, based on the presented drawing of a wooden bunk bed, it is necessary to make the following parts:

  • vertical posts measuring 3.8x7.6x173 cm - 4 pcs.;
  • external linings for racks with dimensions 3.8x7.6x173 cm – 4 pcs.;
  • drawers measuring 3.8x14x203 cm - 4 pcs.;
  • bars for laying frame boards that are attached inside to drawers, with parameters 3.2x4.4x185 - 4 pcs.;
  • elements for assembling the headboard and footboard measuring 2x14x91.4 cm - 4 pcs.;
  • central boards for mounting end structures with dimensions 2x9x91.4 cm - 4 pcs.;
  • railings with parameters 2x9x151 cm - 1 pc.;
  • steps (2x6.4x48.2 cm) – 3 pcs.;
  • elements for creating a fence measuring 2x9x180 cm - 2 pcs.;
  • cross slats for making a bed (2x7.6x100 cm) – 24 pcs.;
  • side boards to create a load-bearing frame measuring 214x91.4 cm - 4 pcs.

Instructions for assembling a bunk bed: stages of creating the structure

How to make a bunk bed? The manufacturing process can begin with the creation supporting structures in the form of a headboard and footboard. These elements are almost identical. The difference lies in the design of the upper part of one of the backs, taking into account the location of the fence railings on it. In this case, on the outer lining vertical stand Three blocks are made to secure the side protective enclosing element.

The footboard and headboard of a children's bunk bed are made by hand from pre-cut posts and crossbars. The supports are made of timber and parts that will cover the holes for fastening the structural elements and form a groove for further laying the side frame boards into it.

Based on the drawing of a bunk bed with the dimensions of all constituent elements, the production of side parts (kings) in the amount of 4 pieces is carried out. These parts will subsequently hold the slats of the structure. A longitudinal strip is attached to the inside, which is necessary to support the mattress, onto which bars are mounted at an equidistant distance from each other. Transverse slats are installed in the formed grooves to support the mattress.

Next, the second tier berth and fencing elements are assembled. The location of the steps (three in number) is indicated on the stand. When installing the lower step, you must ensure that its fasteners do not get into the locations of the screws that hold the side wall of the lower floor.

Then the side structural elements are connected to the drawers, as shown in the do-it-yourself bunk bed drawing. They must be installed in the gaps that have formed between the linings. Each side is screwed using four self-tapping screws.

How to make a bunk bed yourself: assembling stairs and fencing elements

After the frame is assembled, they begin to attach the handrail, ladder, steps and crossbar for the fence. All elements must be connected to each other. Then, using self-tapping screws, the structure is fixed to the bed posts. For whole assembled structure The lamellas are laid between the bars on the side frame boards.

Traditionally, the staircase is made of three steps. Depending on its height, their number can be increased. In this case, it is not at all necessary to install only vertical design. The staircase can be inclined and located at any angle.

It is very easy to assemble. Steps are attached to a base consisting of two bars. In this case, the lower element is additionally connected to the stand of one of the backrests. Others are located one above the other. The steps can be fixed externally using a metal corner or installed in a recess. Any fastening element must be as closed as possible.

If necessary, a finished bunk bed for children can be sanded with your own hands to eliminate any roughness on its surface. Next, it is treated with a special impregnation and covered with stain or varnish.

Helpful advice! For reliability and to prevent the structure from tipping over, it is recommended to mount it on the wall.

How to make a bunk loft bed: the manufacturing process

There are many types of loft beds. For self-production, you can choose a model from the proposed options posted on websites that display detailed drawings of do-it-yourself bunk beds for children.

To create a classic loft bed (dimensions 250x115 cm) with one sleeping place, a ladder and an open area for games, boards will be used different sections. The assembly of a bunk bed begins with the manufacture of its left end side. To do this, cross beams measuring 5x10x95 cm are connected to racks of the same section with a length of 1650 mm, they are mounted in pre-prepared holes and fixed with glue and self-tapping screws. A ladder will be installed on this side.

In the same way, the installation of the right side is organized, which at the same time will become a protective fence. The next step is gluing the bars (5x5x190 cm) with dividing parts to the drawers measuring 5x15x190 cm, which are fastened with self-tapping screws.

Next, the end elements are connected with drawers and wooden elements for a fence measuring 5x10x190 cm. All boards are fastened with bolts. The result is a sleeping place measuring 1.0 x 1.9 m. It is necessary to lay lamellas on the timber. Bolted connections can be secured with wood glue for reliability.

The next step is to assemble a support frame-rack for the platform from boards measuring 5x10x50 cm and 5x10x95 cm. The frame must be attached to the frame landing using boards with parameters 5x10x50 cm and 5x10x10.5 cm.

The entire system is then mounted to the main frame using iron corners, which are screwed onto the inside of the structure. The area is covered with boards (5x10x65 cm), which are immediately connected with glue and then fixed with self-tapping screws.

Important! The heads of the screws should go several millimeters into the wood, and the resulting recesses are sealed with sawdust mixed with glue.

Next, the staircase is installed. To two side boards (5x15x100 cm), the ends of which are cut at an angle of 90 degrees, bars measuring 2.5x5x20 cm are attached in parallel. They should be located opposite each other on the side crossbars. Then wooden steps measuring 5x10x45 cm are mounted on them. The finished structure is attached using metal corners to the podium, after which the strength of the stairs and bed is checked.

Finally, all recesses are sealed and the surface is sanded. All elements are coated with a primer, after which varnish or paint is applied to them.

How to make a pull-out bed with your own hands

To create a pull-out bunk bed, you can use laminated chipboard. The design made from this material is easy to manufacture and does not require special skills and experience from the craftsman. The first step is to create or select finished drawing children's bunk bed with dimensions of all elements.

For the manufacture of the main structural parts, laminated chipboard sheets with a thickness of 19 mm are used. For the lid and lower side of the podium, you can use a furniture panel 22 mm thick. All elements are made on the basis of detailed drawings of a children's bunk bed with your own hands. The photos clearly show every detail of the design of the appropriate dimensions. The components are fastened using screws, bolts and angles.

To create the top tier, you need two sheets of chipboard for the headboard and footboard, and you will also need two thin strips for the side walls. Retractable design made from parts of equal height. The length of this part should be 10 cm less than this value of the upper level.

The lower tier is equipped with wheels, thanks to which the bed can be moved freely if necessary. Used for lathing wooden boards 10 cm thick. For beds 1.7-2 mm long, there should be at least 7 such strips.

When there is limited free space in the room, and you need to arrange two or more sleeping places, a bunk bed comes to the rescue. Today there are many design options that are selected based on the stated requirements. Having completed a detailed drawing of a children's bunk bed, you can independently assemble the chosen model, which will fit perfectly into the interior and save space.

Making a bunk bed with your own hands: video

The housing stock from the time of development of the USSR does not indulge in large apartment areas, and since this is the main part of the modern housing stock in Russia, many families are faced with the problem of lack of space. That is why bunk beds for children are very popular. It allows you to significantly save space by reducing the area under the beds, and modern design options help make this structure also a unique place for storing various things - from toys to clothes.

Children really like bunk beds, they help them seek compromises and learn to negotiate, and also create a very cozy special atmosphere throughout the room.

Variety of bunk beds for children

Children's bunk beds are available for sale in the most various options. This could be a classic bed for 2 children:

There are bunk bed options for adults and 1 child:

Children really like these cribs with a slide:

Or in the form of houses:

Some cribs are made with a sofa underneath. This makes it more convenient to receive guests.

Adults prefer more practical options bunk beds: with a large number of drawers (they can even be in the steps!), with a wardrobe and a table for studying:

Transformer models are also popular, which will serve equally well for a child in younger age, and are suitable for an older teenager:

The transformer must have a table, cabinet and drawers. As a rule, such models are made for 1 child with 1 sleeping place, but a second one can be provided pull out bed as in the photo above.

Corner models look original and attractive. They not only save space, but also securely attach to two walls.

Children's bunk beds are designed in a special way for girls:

Or for boys:

Many models are made unisex:

A bunk bed can be not only for children, but also for teenagers or adults. If you are buying a crib, it is better to immediately order one with a large sleeping area for growth.

The price of bunk beds can vary from 7 to 200 thousand rubles. It all depends on the manufacturer and materials.

Materials for making a bunk crib

Children's 2-tier beds are made from the following materials:

  • metal;
  • tree;
  • plywood.

The main part of the structure can be metal, wood or laminated chipboard. Plywood is used to create a base for a mattress.

Main advantage wooden beds and products made from chipboard is aesthetically attractive design. But metal cribs have a greater safety margin and are guaranteed to last for several decades.

Making a bunk bed with your own hands

It is quite possible and not so difficult to make a bunk bed with your own hands. The whole process can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Preparation of sketches and drawings for the required dimensions.
  2. Preparation of tools and materials.
  3. Making a crib.

Drawing for making a bunk bed

A drawing is the first stage in the production of any furniture. If you do not have the necessary skills for this, you can use a ready-made one. For example? This option is ideal for a small children's room with a crib located in the corner. This way you will save on materials, since fewer supports can be made.

The second tier can be made a little lower if the ceiling in your room does not allow such a structure. Do not make the second tier too high, as this may be dangerous for the child who will sleep there. Firstly, injuries are possible due to a fall (not so much during sleep, but during games). Secondly, warm air rises upward, so sleeping directly under the ceiling is very unpleasant in the warm season. Thirdly, children often like to play on the “2nd floor” of such a crib.

However, you cannot lower the upper bed too much, since an adult will sit on the lower berth and it will be inconvenient for him to constantly bend down or bang his head. It should also be taken into account that children will not always be so short, which means that the distance between the upper berth and the ceiling should also be suitable for an adult.

For the upper bed, you should definitely make handrails. They should be high enough so that the child does not accidentally fall while sleeping.

At the stage of planning and creating a drawing, pay special attention to the location of the stairs to climb to the upper berth. It will need to be well secured and made durable, since it will be used often. Might be worth ordering finished design made of metal. This will increase its strength.

Materials for creating a bunk bed with your own hands

Do it yourself simpler crib from chipboard, since wood and metal require skills to work with them. Quality finished product will be no worse than pine boards, which is often used to make children's furniture.

Calculations necessary materials are made based on the drawing. You can save your time and order chipboard cutting in professional offices. This will slightly increase the cost of production, but all the cuts will be perfectly even and you will only have to glue the edge onto them using an iron or hair dryer.

In addition, you will need 2 sheets of plywood to place under the mattress. Its thickness must be at least 9 millimeters. Theoretically, for the same purposes one can use chipboard sheets or wooden slats, but then the price of the product will increase.

To make the crib, which we presented in the previous figure, you will also need the following components:

Tools for making a DIY bunk bed

To work with chipboard and make a crib you will need the following tools:

Making a crib with your own hands

At the end preparatory work you can start connecting the parts. If the chipboard was cut correctly, then there will be no problems with installation.

This completes the production of a children's bunk crib. Wipe all its surfaces thoroughly, place the mattresses and you can make the beds and use them!

– prices for goods are rising, but you want to live in comfortable living conditions. However, this is quite understandable, and besides, many people are ready to do something on their own to bring benefit to their home. Well, in this article I will tell you how to do this and provide drawings and photographs of such furniture.

You can make such a crib for your children yourself.

What you need for work

Of course, you understand that any furniture is made from something and by something, and these components need to be determined immediately. That is, before starting work, you need to prepare necessary materials and select the required tools.

We select materials

OSB of different thicknesses

In fact, all materials must be made of wood, that is, lumber, but panel products can be different. I’ll just list what you can use, but you’ll have to choose on your own. So, we make a choice:

  • block 50×50 mm;
  • board 50x70 mm (instead of a block, but this is optional);
  • board 100×50 or 150×50 mm;
  • moisture-resistant or laminated plywood or oriented strand board (OSB-3 or OSB-4) - here you need a choice;
  • dowels with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • self-tapping screws (it is better to take white or yellow ones, they do not rust, therefore, they will last much longer);
  • wood glue or PVA, it may be useful, but maybe not, it all depends on the assembly method;
  • varnish (see footnote!).

Attention! There are different varnishes, but don’t forget that you are making a bed for a child! So, look at the instruction sticker, the varnish can be alcohol, alkyd, alkyd-urea, nitroglycerin, polyester, polyurethane, acrylic, oil and water-based. The latter is natural, therefore, cannot cause harm to humans when inhaled (safe not only for adults, but also for children).

What tools will you need?

An electric jigsaw is more convenient than a manual one

Generally speaking, a hammer, a hacksaw and a screwdriver will suffice, but why complicate your life? Now there are many electrical tools that are always useful in the household and these are:

  • electric jigsaw and/or circular hand saw;
  • screwdriver and/or electric drill with attachments;
  • set of drills;
  • metric tape, pencil.

Note. Sandpaper or grinding disc in Bulgarian, but this is not always the case.

Step-by-step assembly of the crib

Essentially, making a crib consists of stages, that is, first the various components are made, and then they are assembled. However, factory assembly occurs in the same way.

Material sizes

Part marking

  1. A – 4 legs 1730x76x38;
  2. B – pads for legs 1730x76x38;
  3. C – 2030x140x38;
  4. D – 1850x44x32;
  5. E – 914x140x20;
  6. F – 914x90x20;
  7. G – 1000x76x20;
  8. H – 1510x90x20;
  9. I – 482x64x20;
  10. J – 1800x90x20.

In addition to these details, stock up on such things as:

  • grinder (belt or disk);
  • clamps for fastening parts.

Backrests

Here you need to make planks from the bars

The backs are hammered onto the dowels

The back at the head and the back at the feet are the same, you can just diversify them for beauty, for example, make an almost continuous crate at the head, and a smaller one at the feet. Instead of lathing, you can use laminated chipboard. Please note that assembly is done with dowels and wood glue or PVA - they must fit tightly and are driven in with a hammer. There is one more nuance for the legs - if someone does not like to rest their feet on the crossbars, then the middle board should not be installed, although this is not so important for children.

How to make side walls

Side wall image

Focus your attention on the bars that run horizontally along the stack - they are made using the block method. This device allows you to fix the bottom slats. Therefore, you should consider the strength of the bars when purchasing them - there should be no cracks, rot and/or wane, so that an accident does not happen (the bottom does not fall out). You can even use a 50x70 mm board instead of a block - it will be more reliable.

Make the wall itself from edged polished boards 50x200 mm and again look at the quality so that there are no cracks, fungus or wane. You will need to paint the walls for production, but do not use nitro varnishes - it is best to buy the preparations at water based Aqua type. You can also paint the walls with oil wax, but this will be much more expensive.

Frame

Crib frame

The slats on the frame rest on the bars on the sides, but they should be secured with self-tapping screws so that they do not move out of place. As for laying, it should not be too tight, that is, the batten should be inserted by hand and not hammered in, because otherwise the lumber will creak from friction. They should not be treated with varnish - the bottom will still be made of chipboard, MDF or OSB.

Making a staircase

Making a staircase

Let's start with what a staircase is in general separate part structures that should be easy to remove and just as easy to put back in place. It is important here not to attach it permanently - the ladder can easily detach, but at the same time be held in place so that the child cannot fall from it.

Stair parts

It’s not difficult, just correctly calculate the slope and pitch of the steps. If we talk about optimal inclination, then this is 29-33⁰, although this is not a critical indicator (you can do it much steeper), and steps for a child can be placed at 30-35 cm intervals. Do not forget that the varnish itself is slippery, so you should not apply several layers – one will be enough. Below you can watch a video - this is one of the options for manufacturing products.

Another option

Let's look at a few more options - they are very similar, like all projects, well, a bed is a bed. Don’t be alarmed that all the actions may seem identical - there is a very big difference.

Selection of materials

Bunk bed option

At the moment, let's try to select the most common materials, although they can even be called the easiest in technical terms:

  • solid wood (log) - the most good material, but it requires at least minimal carpentry experience and machines. At home, this is not available to everyone;
  • ready-made lumber from solid wood - edged polished boards and bars. GOST 17231-78 says that for similar products humidity should not exceed 10-12% (no cracks, rot or wane). Otherwise, the lumber may twist like a helicopter;
  • MDF is a fine fraction of lumber that does not produce chips when sawing and drilling. It has average density, but it is more expedient to use it as a cladding material. There are laminated sheets, but they are more expensive than regular ones - that’s a big deal personal choice. You can order sawing at a carpentry shop (they will also glue the edges there), but it’s easy to do it yourself;
  • Chipboard is a particle board without any coating. It has poor density, so such panels are not recommended for use under heavy loads. It is better to use laminated chipboards (laminated boards) as the bottom of the crib or backrests;
    OSB – oriented strand boards. They are divided into 4 classes - OSB-1, OSB-2, OSB-3 and OSB-4. Only OSB-3 and OSB-4 are moisture-resistant - this is an excellent material for a crib.

How to tie knots

1 – half-tree docking, 2 – paw docking

Here are two ways to make a connection: the first option is easier, and the second is more reliable. But the joint on the paw will have to be cut with a jigsaw or a hacksaw.

1 – joining with complete cutting, 2 – joining with incomplete cutting, 3 – connection to a reinforced steel angle

For the first two methods, it is better to do the joining using fixation with wood glue or PVA. The second method is more relevant when using self-tapping screws, but this is only for solid wood.

1 – joining with rectangular keys, 2 – joining with a dovetail type, 3 – joining with a main tenon

In this case, all connections are good, so you can use the one that is easier for you to make or just the one that you like best.

Several options with drawings

A little decor when cutting out the backs and walls

This option is already for professional carpenters

Here the child will have a place not only to sleep, but also to play.

The staircase and lower tier can be used as wardrobes bed linen or for clothes

Video: Bed in the form of a castle

In the photos and videos you see that there are essentially no restrictions for design, but a lot will depend on your skills. You understand that most things are now made on machines and with special carpentry tools, which not every home has. But if you wish, you can order some parts from specialists (you can’t buy them in a store).

And one more nuance - step by step guide, as such, for making a crib does not exist in nature. You can see for yourself that there can be many options, and everything will depend on your skill and desire (on financial capabilities too). But if you don’t even have experience in carpentry, then you can learn this and the first step will be a sleeping place for your child or even two offspring.

Conclusion

I think you have figured out how to make a children's bunk bed with your own hands, and you can decide on such an experiment. The most important thing here is not to have a complex because of inability or fear of something new (you probably remember who burns pots).
