Choosing the right materials for the ceiling in the bathroom is not so difficult. simple task. A bath is a place of high humidity; not every coating can withstand such pressure. Slatted ceilings not only look beautiful, but are also able to withstand a large number of water, no damage. Therefore, below we will discuss how to install a slatted ceiling in a bathroom.

Before installing this or that type of ceiling, you need to understand what types of material it is made from. Slats for structures are made of three types of materials: wood, PVC and metal. Using wood in a bathroom is quite absurd, so we don’t take this material into account, but the rest are quite suitable.

Plastic slats. PVC materials are very often used in bathroom renovations. Its operational characteristics allow it to be installed anywhere, it does not damage general form and is cheap. It is easy to work with, which means you can complete the installation operation yourself. Caring for such a ceiling will be easy and simple. Modern market offers wide choose various colors and drawings.

But plastic also has undoubted disadvantages. It doesn't last long. For some reason, many people think the opposite. Probably due to the fact that it takes a long time to decompose, but this does not affect its service life. Plastic quickly loses its attractiveness appearance, afraid of strong mechanical influences. It may be cheaper, but think about it, you will have to change the ceiling about once every 5 years, which negates the savings. Of course, you can live with yellowed, cracked ceilings. But here the choice is yours.

Metal slats. Made from two types of alloys: aluminum and steel. Aluminum ceilings indifferent to water and high temperatures. The service life is very long. Fits well in small room, since the mirror surface will visually expand the space. The only drawback that can be found does not even relate to the material itself, but to the type of construction. Suspended ceilings always take up a few centimeters in height. Although for aluminum this is not such a big minus due to mirror surface, as mentioned above.

Steel slats. Its advantages and disadvantages are identical to aluminum, but the price will be more expensive. The steel used is stainless, and this greatly increases the price of the structure. But nothing can kill steel ceilings. Whatever you do with them, steel is steel.

The slats are also divided according to their appearance. There are no color restrictions. You can choose any one. With or without a picture. But the coverage is different.

Mirror. Such ceilings will visually double the space. But not everyone likes this bathroom coating, so think before you choose.

Glossy. More moderate shine than mirror. When choosing such a surface, it is better not to choose powerful lamps. The gloss will reflect all the light.

Matte and semi-matte. More moderate design. Such ceilings do not shine or shimmer and create more comfort.

According to the dimensions of the slats standard sizes: 3cm, 4cm and 6cm length. Width from 25 mm to 400 mm.

The slats differ in the type of connection to the guide (the shape of the panels). There are three types: Strict straight slats in the shape of the letter P. Round slats with rounded walls. And an adjacent type in the shape of the letter P, but with rounded edges.

AND last type differences in connection type. Open: planks in the shape of the letter U; after installation, the gaps at the joints are closed with special planks. The closed joint lays the slats according to the lining principle. Gapless. There is no need for additional strips and there will be no distance between the slats.

Advantages and disadvantages of slatted ceilings

Above we have already looked at what materials the slats are made from, but since PVC is not best material for a bath, further we will talk mainly about aluminum ceilings.

Slat ceiling masks all imperfections.

The suspended structure does not require additional finishing of the ceiling; all that is needed is to treat it with an antifungal compound so that mold does not form under the structure. Aluminum itself does not rot and does not oxidize.

Its service life exceeds 15 years.

Taking care of it is as easy as shelling pears. If a stain appears somewhere, just wipe it with a rag. Even though he's not the best cheap option finishing, installation is quite simple. You can install a slatted ceiling in the bathroom with your own hands.

In terms of design, it will suit almost any style. Designers are now creating beautiful multi-level structures from slats, and a slatted ceiling allows you to bring all your fantasies to life.

Despite all the advantages, there are still a number of small disadvantages.

If one of the planks becomes deformed for some reason, the entire structure will have to be disassembled down to the desired plank. This is unlikely, but still a minus.

The appearance of such structures does not differ in “warmth”. For the bathroom this is not such a minus, but not everyone likes cold-looking rooms. Properly selected lighting and other interior items will help add a touch of coziness.

Installation of slatted ceilings

The slatted ceiling for the bathroom is installed in several stages, but first it is necessary to carry out preliminary work.

An important stage in the installation of any ceiling structures- measurements. They should always be produced before purchasing the material. The definition of “by eye” will greatly disappoint you later. Measure the length and width of the ceiling perimeter with a tape measure. Before purchasing, you also need to measure the volume of all lighting fixtures. All wires must be brought to the points where the lamps will be installed.

In order to calculate how much material is needed, add the length and width and multiply by 2. This number determines the length of the frame. To calculate the area, multiply the length by the width, and then divide the resulting number by the area of the slats. To this number, add about 20 percent of the total, since damage may occur during the work or the length is not what is needed.

After this, apply the markings with a marker or pencil. Decide how many centimeters from the ceiling the structure will be located. The spacing is based on the width of the fixture housing. Since they are most often placed in the bathtub Spotlights, then the required distance is approximately 5 cm. If the body is wide, then you need to retreat more.

Use a tape measure to find the lowest angle. The required distance is counted and installation begins precisely from this point. Draw an installation line along the entire perimeter of the walls.

After this, it’s time to purchase materials. ABOUT various types designs we have already discussed above, so choose which one suits you. For installation you will need:

  • aluminum slats;
  • starting profile;
  • pendants;
  • stringer.

In addition to materials, you will also need tools, so if you are missing something, buy more.

  • perforator;
  • screwdriver;
  • metal scissors;
  • dowels and screws.

Now it’s time for the actual installation. The first step is to install the frame. Attach the supporting profiles to the wall and mark the holes. The distance between the holes is approximately 50 cm. Drill the holes, and then fix the profile with screws.

The next step is attaching the hangers. The approximate distance between them is 100 cm, the very first one should be located no further than 30 cm from the wall. Mark the location of the holes and drill holes. Secure the hangers with self-tapping screws and bend the edges. The structure must be level, so after installing some elements, check the levelness with a level. The supporting rails are installed on self-tapping screws perpendicular to the suspension at the level with the profile. The frame is ready, then the slats themselves are installed.

Install the slats carefully, as they are front side. Remove from slats protective film. On some slats at the back, mark the location for the lights and cut out holes. If you need to shorten the slats, you can use a hacksaw. The length should be 1 cm shorter than the distance between the walls. Often in apartments the walls and ceilings are uneven. Never cut all the planks at once. Adjust each strip to its length separately, this will save you from unpleasant surprises and you won’t have to throw away the damaged strip.

Insert the first rail all the way, you will hear a click. Depending on the type of rack engagement, you may need additional strips. If they are necessary, then install them alternately with the slats. If not, then the slats are inserted close to each other. Fill the entire ceiling like this.

As the work progresses, install the lamps in place, connecting them to the wires. Then check if they work. The ceiling is ready.

If you ever need to dismantle the ceiling, simply remove 1 strip at a time from the mount.

The frame is removed by unscrewing the screws. And if you are going to make some non-standard designs, then the profiles for the slats are installed in the same direction. Those. if their location is diagonal, then the profile is installed in the same position.

Rack ceilings in various interiors

Slatted ceilings can be used in several colors; this will dilute the interior and make it more interesting. But choose colors so that they are in harmony with the overall colors of the design. Those. whatever color predominates in the room should also predominate on the ceiling.

Two-level ceilings look unusual and impressive. But be careful when choosing multi-level structures with an abundance of details, such ceilings significantly reduce the height; if you have low ceilings, you should not experiment.

For those who are not afraid of experimenting with the interior, there are interesting design solutions with combination different materials. The photo below shows slatted ceilings in combination with suspended ceilings.

Mirror ceilings are the most common type, thanks to which they are widely known. Gives the room shine, and in combination with the right lighting will make your bath simply shine.

Depending on the geometric shape bathroom, the slats will look different. So, for example, in a square room it will be more effective to arrange the slats diagonally, and in a rectangular room along them.

All work on arranging the ceiling in the bathroom is carried out last.

In bathroom good decision There will be a slatted ceiling installed. Before installation draw a diagram of the room, mark where the lamps will be and calculate required amount wall corner, support rail (stringer), suspensions and panels.

The next step is to prepare the ceiling space, the surface is treated with an antifungal primer or anti-mold solution.

To perform installation, you need to purchase the following materials and have the following tools:

  • , its kit includes load-bearing combs, wall profile and slats;
  • pendants;
  • dowels;
  • perforator;
  • screwdriver;
  • water level;
  • building level;
  • scissors or hacksaw for cutting metal;
  • measuring instruments;
  • marker.
First on ceiling height is marked on the wall, do this using a water level, after which they install a U-shaped profile.

If you are creating multi-level ceiling, then the calculations and markings will be more complex.

The distance between the main one will depend on what you plan to place there, if only electrical wiring, then 5 cm will be enough, if built-in lamps are installed, then this distance will be increased.

Apply markings under the load-bearing combs, we draw the lines parallel to each other, and in relation to the panels, at right angles.

The wall profile is fixed to the wall in increments of 40-50 cm, after that, according to the completed markings install hangers. The outer hangers should be 30-40 cm away from the wall, and the distance between adjacent elements should be from 1.2 to 1.5 meters.

After installing the hangers, they tires with grooves are fixed.

The stringers should be shorter than the length of the room and not reach it by approximately 1 cm, this will compensate for their possible expansion.

Panel installation

You need to cut the panels, keep in mind that they are made a few millimeters shorter than the distance between load-bearing profiles. In the grooves of the carrier comb panels are inserted until a characteristic click occurs, which indicates their fixation.

It is rare that the entire last panel can be installed; it is usually cut off. To make the installation process easier, the cut panel is installed next to last, and the length of the latter is made 14 mm less.

In order to ensure a long period service of the slatted ceiling, it is necessary to carry out its installation efficiently and properly care for it:

  • plastic and metal panels are not afraid of water, they can be wiped with a damp cloth soaked in a non-abrasive detergent;
  • for the kitchen, aluminum construction is best;
  • metal elements are environmentally friendly, therefore they are used in both residential and non-residential premises;
  • For the kitchen you need to choose panels with a protective film.

Conclusion

Since the installation of a slatted ceiling is simple, any home craftsman can handle it with his own hands. The main thing is to follow the instructions, make the markings correctly and securely fasten the hangers.

Reiki in bathroom design

It's no secret that even with a variety of fans and hoods in the bathroom, you still can't get rid of high humidity. The ceiling in such a room must be decorated with high quality in order to preserve long term operation of the finish.

Quite popular in Lately steel ceilings for the bathroom are slatted, characterized by high performance indicators. In addition, they have a wonderful appearance, allowing you to think not only about functionality, but also about design.

Types and characteristics

So: what is a slatted bathroom ceiling? In principle, this is a regular hanging structure that is easy to install.

Ceiling slats are mainly manufactured in three versions:

  • Galvanized steel
  • Aluminum
  • Plastic

Hanging structures for the bathroom, slatted

Their front finish can be very different: matte, mirror (see), decorated with photo printing with geometric or floral pattern, or imitate wood.

Please note: By the way, about wood: it is also used for making slats, which can either be hemmed to base ceiling, and hung on the frame. It’s just that heat-treated wood is used, which is not afraid of high humidity in the bathroom.

In any case, they are installed not in small apartment bathrooms, but in houses with large area bathrooms and the presence of windows for ventilation. But more often it is still an imitation of the texture and configuration of a wooden slat.

  • Each type of slats has its own technical features. Slats, which have a wide variety of colors and sizes, form the basis of the ceiling. But they can have not only the traditional form of panels. For example, to create perforated ceilings, slats of the same configuration as in the photo above are used.
  • Their face covering or protected special composition, or itself is moisture resistant. These are silicone and powder paints, polymer coatings.
  • It is attached to a pre-assembled frame. It is possible to embed a variety of lighting fixtures into the surface. To do this, you must first carry out rough ceiling electrical wire to supply energy.

Structure

Note. The design of the frame for installing the slats is self-supporting, and all finishing elements are installed quite simply. If any panel is broken or deformed, it can be separately dismantled and replaced.

Advantages and disadvantages

Slatted ceilings for the bathroom have a number of advantages. First of all, high strength. The quality of the material meets European standards.

Distinctive features:

  • Functionality, and high performance properties.
  • The structures are not flammable and adapted to elevated temperatures.
  • Light reflectance is very high. Thanks to slatted ceilings, you can create effective and interesting lighting in the room.
  • Don't forget about the ease of installation of the slats.
  • The surface is very easy to clean.
  • Slatted ceilings in the bathroom can hide the height of the walls. Therefore, it is not recommended to use them in small spaces.

This design has no other disadvantages, except high cost. Perhaps the need to carry out installation in a strictly established sequence - this can be said about any other technology.

Metal slats

Metal, especially when it is protected from moisture or does not itself corrode, is the most practical material. The first option is galvanized steel, the second is aluminum (see), which also has a coating, but solely for decorative purposes.

  • Everyone knows that steel is cheaper than aluminum, and therefore ceilings made from such slats belong to the economy class. Aluminum is more expensive, but it also lasts longer. Their appearance depends on the manufacturer, but most often these are plain slats in the most popular colors: glossy white, matte and pearl; steel; gold; metallic and chrome.
  • Dimensions depend on the design of the ceiling. If these are panels, then they have on average three options in width: 85 (90); 135 (140) and 185 (190) mm. The thickness of aluminum ones can generally be only 3-4 mm. For steel panels this size is 6-8 mm.

Note: By the way, some manufacturers produce universal systems that are suitable not only for ceilings, but also for walls, including facades.

If it is, then its height can be almost twice the width - for example: 50 * 30 mm. Such slats are used not only for installing perforated ceilings, but also as a decorative insert between panels. The length of panels and slats is usually three meters.

Plastic

Plastic ceilings have been used for many years because they have a high moisture resistance and are not subject to temperature changes. The plastic ceiling has an attractive and neat appearance, and can even, as in the photo above, be the main accent of the interior of the room.

Advice. Do not clean the coating with abrasives. detergents- they can damage the surface of the material.

In appearance, the slatted ceiling in the bathroom resembles plastic lining. The installation principle is also very similar. Such panels have a slightly larger format: 8 mm thick and 200 mm wide. The traditional length is 3m or 4m.

But the front finish of plastic differs from metal panels. There is no longer metallic or gold all over the surface. And more often, golden or silver stripes on a white plain background.

The background can also be blue, flesh-colored, greenish or light gray with shading, or an imitation of the texture of wood, which has already been mentioned above. In more expensive options, these can be all kinds of patterns applied using photo printing.

Some installation nuances

Slatted ceilings in the bathroom are installed quite simply. Initially, it is necessary to prepare the surface and build a frame on it.

Surface preparation:

  • In order to properly prepare the surface, you will not need to initially level it. With the help of a slatted ceiling and due to the construction of a frame on the rough, visible defects are hidden.
  • IN preparatory work includes cleaning the surface, insulating it and insulating it if necessary. Slatted ceilings for a bathroom are insulated, usually in a private house.
  • For this purpose, it is better to use materials made of polyethylene foam with a foil surface. They are thinner, do not need a vapor barrier, and are easier to attach to the base, since many of them have a self-adhesive base.

The preparation process involves cleaning the surface and setting marks for mounting the frame.

For this you will need:

  • Pencil.
  • Level.
  • Roulette.

Measurements are taken along the entire perimeter of the room. To do this, the height of each wall is measured and the average number of fixings for a suspended slatted ceiling is calculated.

The process is quite labor-intensive and it is best to use a chalk level, which is stretched crosswise from the corners of the room and thus not only is the central point for attaching the main lighting fixture (if necessary), but also an acceptable height of the suspended ceiling is established.

It is also necessary to ensure a smooth surface of the walls, since after installing the suspended ceiling, unevenness and defects in the finishing may appear (cracks will appear between the ceiling and the wall, which are quite difficult to repair).

Installation of frame and slats

During installation, the slats can be directed in any direction: along the length, width or diagonal of the room. The main thing is that the frame is positioned correctly. Rather than reading it a hundred times, it’s better to watch a video once that shows the whole process.

By purchasing a set of slatted ceilings for your bathroom, you can be sure that you will have all the necessary fittings. And it will fit perfectly with the elements of the subsystem.

Completeness

It includes:

  • Panels ceiling covering
  • Tires for fastening the rail
  • Corner wall profiles
  • Slot profile (depending on manufacturer)
  • Adjustable suspension.

When purchasing, the package contains detailed instructions according to which the ceiling covering is assembled.

Assembly order

Initially mounted bearing structures: wall profile and hangers, which are attached to the base with wedge anchors.

  • If there are no built-in lamps on the ceiling, since in the bathroom they are often wall-mounted, then the support rails can be mounted without hangers - directly to the ceiling.
  • When installing the corner, holes are drilled under the dowels using a hammer drill. To screw the self-tapping screw into the dowel sleeve, use a regular screwdriver.
  • The suspended structure is leveled and secured.
  • Then the panels are fastened. Their form factor is designed in such a way that they snap onto the grooves of the traverse, as shown in the picture.

Please note: the panels are attached perpendicular to the load-bearing elements of the frame. This must be kept in mind at the marking stage.

Note: It is best to start hanging the covering from the door or from the most visible part of the room, so that it is possible to hide the longitudinal cuts of the panels. They most often have to be done to fit the last rail.

By searching: “slat ceiling in the bathroom video,” you will find a video, and more than one, that clearly shows the whole process.

You just need to keep in mind that designs from different manufacturers may come together a little differently. The shapes of the slats and the depth of the technological grooves on the cross-arms are somewhat different. Therefore, it is best to buy the entire set at once, and from one brand.

How to disassemble a suspended slatted ceiling

There are times when it is necessary to dismantle the structure.

This is usually necessary in cases:

  • replacing a damaged rack;
  • performing repair work;
  • installation of new lamps.

The suspended ceiling in the bathroom is as easy to disassemble as it is to assemble. This can be done by a person who has never done this.

Since this design does not have a plinth as such (its role is played by wall corners), disassembling the ceiling begins with the element with which the assembly ended. And then, in order: each panel is carefully released from the teeth of the support rail.

Design of slatted hanging systems for the bathroom

When compared, for example, with tension or cassette systems, suspended slatted ceilings for the bathroom do not differ in their wide range of design possibilities. Everything is limited by the direction in which the slats are installed and the use of different color range and materials.

  • Let's say plastic can be combined with aluminum panels, and glossy slats with matte ones. Slightly different colors will make it possible to diversify the picture.
  • It is quite possible, with a little more imagination and effort, to form a two-level structure using slats. She looks interesting and beautiful.
  • The slats laid in a herringbone pattern look original. A combination of different colored materials will increase the effect.
  • Polished metal looks great, coupled with properly built-in lighting.
  • It is not recommended to make slatted suspended ceilings in the bathroom with too complex a configuration. This is explained by the fact that they often need to be washed.
  • The most practical and convenient option lighting in a bathroom with suspended slatted structures is the installation of devices. When choosing them, you should pay attention to the degree of protection from moisture.
  • In this case, it is best to use low-current lamps that have built-in transformers that reduce the voltage.

The use of other types of lamps is not excluded. You can use wall sconces or semicircular lamps, but when installing slatted suspended ceilings for the bathroom, we must not forget about safety precautions.

In rooms with high humidity air, ordinary whitewashing is often inappropriate, and optimal solution can become slatted ceilings for the bathroom and combined bathroom. Let's find out what this finish is.

So, you have planned a renovation or, on the contrary, you are just about to finish a newly built house. At the same time, you initially do not plan to use drywall in the bathroom, but you are not satisfied with whitewash either, since it easily becomes stained. In this case, you can either do suspended ceiling, or turn to slatted sheathing. It must be said that of all the listed options, the tension one is the most expensive; in addition, you will need not only to buy materials and everything that is necessary for installation, but also to hire experienced specialists. You can handle a slatted ceiling yourself if you know how the individual elements are attached.

Slatted ceiling covering

If whitewashing is considered the most budget solution and the most short-lived, and drywall is often not moisture-resistant enough, slats for ceiling cladding can be considered the most reliable option. The fact is that they were originally intended for use in rooms with high humidity air and therefore are made from materials that are not afraid of water. The most common option is, quite wide and at the same time very light. The main disadvantage of the material is that if it is necessary to replace 1 element, you must disassemble the entire structure up to it from the edge. Aluminum slatted ceilings for the bathroom are more convenient, they are durable because they do not corrode, and, in addition, they are also very light. Another material, more expensive and heavier - stainless steel, which is at the same time more durable.

So, we found out what durable ceilings can be made from. Now let's look at the technical side. Characteristics This cladding is its shape, which was designed specifically to facilitate installation. Actually, there are 3 types: open, closed and gapless, and each of the options is quite popular. The choice of one type or another is made depending on financial capabilities, as well as on the basis of the height of the ceilings and the style of finishing of the bathroom as a whole. But we will consider each type separately in more detail. For metal slats, the principle of installation of any option is similar: specially curved sidewalls are snapped onto transverse stringer strips (they are also called traverses) with hooks. The plastic is attached differently - in special wall guide profiles.

Example of a slatted ceiling in an office

The next thing to pay attention to is the width of the strips, since they are usually long enough to cut into several pieces. But the number of slats, taking into account their width and type of fasteners, must be calculated correctly. usually have dimensions from 7.5 centimeters to 20 (inclusive) in width, and in length, as a rule, 3–4 meters. The most popular size is 100 millimeters. In this case, it is desirable that the thickness of the metal of the installed slats be at least 0.5 millimeters, especially in relation to aluminum, since otherwise there is a possibility of deformation even at the installation stage. In any case, narrow panels are quite thin, and this allows them to be cut without difficulty.

Take into account that, taking into account the suspensions, traverses with an already installed ceiling covering will make the room lower by at least 5 centimeters, and in some cases by 10 if the ceiling is significantly curvature.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the decorative qualities of the slats. The fact is that metal, in particular aluminum, panels are used for 2 types of design - German and Italian. Accordingly, different models are used for this: in the first case, with sides bent with a clearly defined 90-degree angle line, which gives a flat surface, and in the second case, with curved sides that have no angle at all. German panels are used to create a more austere style, while Italian panels provide some wavyness to the ceiling with soft, blurry transitions of light and shade. As for texture, slats can be matte or mirror, with a metallic sheen or with a polymer coating.

This option is perhaps the least demanding in terms of the accuracy of connecting individual strips, since the stringers with which such series are equipped leave a small gap between the slats. Actually, in the gaps there should be special decorative inserts, so-called layouts, which can be made of either plastic or metal. Usually they are made in a contrasting color, or vice versa, if the slats are covered with a uniform polymer layer, they can be metallized. However, in some cases you can do without layouts, leaving gaps between the panels.

Open slatted ceiling

As a rule, it all depends on the height of the ceiling and its intended purpose. If you need to create a certain style in the bathroom, or complement an existing one decorative coating ceiling - inserts must be installed. This is also necessary for low ceilings. But if layouts are excluded from the design, you will get excellent ventilation of the floor covered with slats. This option is justified where decorativeness does not play a big role, or if the height of the ceiling can hide the presence of gaps between the slats.

Standard kits that can usually be purchased for open mounting include panels that are 8.4 centimeters wide and layouts that can be 6 or 16 millimeters wide. Each individual pair of such elements is called a module, that is, to cover the ceiling, you need to consider the panel and the insert following it as one whole. The size of the gap between the slats depends solely on the stringers (also called combs), more precisely on the location of the hooks.

In cases where you don't particularly need Beautiful design, which is provided by layouts, but you wouldn’t want the overlap to be visible in the gap, it’s better to choose panels with closed joints. Their difference is that where open models have through gaps, closed sides that fit onto hooks have small flaps that close when the slats are installed. Accordingly, it is no longer possible to insert the layout into this gap, and a deep groove is created between the slats. It is optimal to use this option with metallized textures or with a “wood-like” texture.

Closed ceiling

The standard dimensions of closed models of rack structures are completely identical to open ones, that is, the sides of the panels used for mounting on stringers have a height of 1.6 centimeters. But German and Italian slatted designs have slightly different widths of the folds that close the gaps. So, in the German version, the lapel corresponds to the height of the side, bent from the main plane by 90 degrees, that is, its width is the same 16 millimeters. But for Italian kits, taking into account the inward bend of the side, the bend is slightly larger and reaches 2.5 centimeters. The comb, of course, is used in a completely different shape, with grooves specifically for horizontally oriented lapels.

An excellent solution from a design point of view is the dense installation of panels, between which there are no gaps, but only thin seams, which are almost invisible in a dark color, for example, wood. This option is achieved as follows. For fastening to the traverse comb, original “arrows” are made, to which the appropriately bent edges of the panel sides cling. This type of ceiling covering is also called S-design due to the contour of the panel edge profile. It is noteworthy that the metal thickness of such strips is rarely more than 0.58 millimeters, but the smallest available value of this parameter is 0.35 millimeters.

Seamless ceilings in the bathroom

The standard sizes of the panels used to assemble a gapless slatted suspended ceiling are usually as follows: the width can be 25 millimeters, as well as 10 or 15 centimeters. As for the length, slats of 3 or 4 meters are standard, and longer ones are usually made on special orders. Any panels can be installed without cutting, provided that stringers are placed every 120 centimeters, which will prevent the structure from sagging in any area. However, it should be taken into account that gapless slats long length It is quite difficult to install, and given the small thickness of the material, they can be easily deformed.

So, the main ones positive sides We already know about this cladding, but we’ll voice them again: moisture resistance and strength. Actually, this applies to all materials from which slats are made, including steel, not to mention plastic and aluminum. In addition, the second and third materials are lightweight. If speak about metal panels, covered powder paint, we can safely say that it is environmentally friendly pure material. Also, aluminum and steel are not flammable, but plastic panels are made of PVC, which melts quite easily and smokes heavily, and when high temperatures lights up quickly.

Installation of slatted ceiling

Slotless slatted ceilings are also installed in the bathroom for reasons of additional sound insulation, since they actually partially reflect noise, both coming from inside the room and coming from outside. Another advantage is that the coating is very easy to care for, since it is enough to wipe it with a damp cloth or sponge. It should also be mentioned that the installation of such a structure is also quite simple; even a beginner can handle it if you carefully read the instructions; all parts are connected without using special tools. And a definite plus is the ability to hide all communications and wires laid in the bathroom behind a suspended slatted ceiling.

But this design also has disadvantages. In particular, in a low room the ceiling will become significantly lower. Also, the small thickness of the metal, which we mentioned earlier, creates certain inconveniences when transporting the panels, since they are very easy to damage. During the cleaning process, the mirror slatted ceiling in the bathroom will quickly become covered with scratches if the wiping cloth is not soft enough, which means special wipes are needed. But all these disadvantages can be eliminated with due care; otherwise, suspended coverings allow you to quickly tidy up the ceiling, especially if there are signs of water leakage on it due to flooding by your neighbors above.

How to properly install a rack-and-pinion structure?

First you need to make sure that the bottom plane ceiling perfectly smooth and, if necessary, cover the cracks and recesses with putty or plaster. Next you will need a drill, a level, plastic dowels for screws, screws and companion tool, that is, a screwdriver or screwdriver. It also doesn’t hurt to have a pencil or chalk, coated thread and a construction tape measure on hand. Included future design adjustable hangers, wall profiles, stringers and the slats themselves must be available and in sufficient quantities.

Instructions

Step 1: Support Profile

So, the first thing we do is mark the perimeter of the bathroom to install the wall profile, which will be installed before other complete fasteners. We make marks on each wall with an equal distance from the floor. Attention! You need to measure exactly from the floor, since the ceiling can be laid crookedly, and this is exactly what should be hidden with the help of a suspended structure. Therefore, it is important that all areas of the coating below are at the same height. Next, we use coated thread to mark a line along each wall and screw the profiles using screws.

Step 2: Attach the hangers

The next step will require you to make accurate calculations. For each stringer, the length of which can vary from 3 to 4 meters (if necessary, you can saw off the excess), the hangers must be positioned on the same line. In this case, the distance between them can be about 120 centimeters, as well as between the rows. Based on this, we make markings, drill holes in the ceiling, insert plastic dowels into them and screw the hangers with screws through special eyelets. Using adjusting springs, we adjust all the spokes so that their hooks, on which the stringers are suspended, are at the same level and always higher than the wall profile.

Step 3: Installation of the suspended structure

Now all that remains is to pass the hanger hooks through special grooves in the stringers, after which we carefully adjust the entire system again using a level. Be sure to cut the traverses so that there is a distance of about 5 millimeters from their ends to the walls. Next, we begin to snap the slats, but before that we need to make sure that the panels will lie on the shelves of the wall profiles with almost no gaps. You need to start assembling the casing from the edge. At the same stage, we lay wires behind the structure and install lamps.

A slatted ceiling in a bathroom is a functional, stylish and simple solution. Slatted ceilings are easy to install, resistant to moisture, and retain their original appearance for up to 15 years. Shades and types of textures are varied, there are attractive combinations for every taste. In this article I will talk about how to choose slats for a specific room, using their advantages to the fullest.

Where to start?

The slatted ceiling is installed during finishing works last but not least. When the floor and walls are decorated, you can begin its installation.

This process will be short and “clean”, except that a small amount of dust is generated when installing the frame around the perimeter of the walls.

Before purchasing materials, consider:

Having answered these questions, sketch out a design diagram and begin choosing the color and other parameters of the slats. Using the diagram, you can calculate the amount of materials. Now you have a clear vision of what the bathroom ceiling will look like and an estimate for the purchase of all structural parts.

Choosing slats for the ceiling

The progenitor of rack structures was ordinary lining, which has been used in interior decoration for many years. A suspended slatted ceiling is a frame around the perimeter of the room with many long elements laid sequentially. The main difficulty for the bathroom owner is hidden in the choice of these elements.

Rail parameters important for consideration:

  • Type of connection between each other.
  • Product material.
  • The width of the line.
  • Glossy or matte finish.
  • Absence or presence of perforations.

Now slats with any combination of these parameters are sold. Search necessary materials It will be easier if you know what dimensions, surface texture and type of connection are suitable for you.

Connection type

According to the type of connection they are:

  • open;
  • closed;
  • with intermediate inserts.

For the open type, products are produced with edges rounded on the sides. They are laid next to each other, leaving a small gap between them. Such gaps are useful because in a room with poor ventilation they help air circulation and remove excess moisture.

When installing a ceiling with open type rail connections Special attention It is necessary to remove moisture-proof insulation of electrical wires and lighting elements. If the bathroom is small and without high-quality ventilation, moisture will accumulate behind the hanging surface.

Closed slats have a “lock” protrusion along one edge and are fastened together. They form a continuous canvas, on which the joints may be practically invisible. This option is good for small rooms with low walls, since a solid canvas visually occupies a smaller volume of the room.

If intermediate inserts are provided between the panels, they will also form a continuous sheet. The gaps allow micro-ventilation, but do not significantly affect humidity. However, inter-slat inserts provide more opportunities for decoration.

Material

The basis for slatted panels can be:

  • aluminum;
  • steel;
  • plastic.

Regarding the improvement of the bathroom, you can safely draw conclusions about which material is most functional in use. So, steel is definitely not The best decision For bathroom.

Steel is cheaper than aluminum, has good rigidity, and gives high level soundproofing. But steel is susceptible to corrosion, and even better paintwork will not save it from rust in 2-3 years.

Plastic does not rust and is cheaper than other materials. However, it is more fragile; over time, dents may appear on it after carelessly changing lighting fixtures or too vigorous cleaning.

Aluminum slatted ceiling

Aluminum products have many advantages, and only one drawback - they are more expensive than steel and plastic. The advantages include:

  • combination of lightness and strength;
  • resistance to corrosion, fungal infections;
  • ease of care;
  • durability.

Aluminum slatted structures remain attractive for 10-15 years, they do not change color, do not crack, and are resistant to minor impacts and pressure. That is, they cannot be damaged during minor repairs or cleaning. In addition, dust practically does not settle on them, so all care for such a surface consists of wiping with a damp sponge every few months.

Aluminum parts are very light, square meter the structure can weigh about 1.5 kg, with this weight the frame can be easily mounted on any wall. At the same time, aluminum is fire-resistant and provides good sound insulation. And they look aluminum suspended structures respectable, modern.

Slat sizes

The length of the panels is 3-4 meters, they are easy to cut according to the right sizes. The thickness of aluminum products is usually 0.6mm, they are flexible, suitable for installation multi-level ceilings and levels that are complex in shape.

But the width can be from 9 to 20 cm. This size is important for the design of the room, since narrow slats will visually stretch the room in one direction. Therefore, with their help you can make proportions narrow room more comfortable by placing the slats perpendicular to the length of the room. Wide panels emphasize the spaciousness of a large bathroom.

Gloss or noble matte?

Glossy ceilings visually increase the volume of the room, fill it with light due to reflection, and increase the height of the walls. This solution would be good for a small bathroom or a room with low walls.. Gloss goes well with modern interior styles; this design can decorate a room with a laconic design and minimal decor.

But on glossy surfaces, accumulating steam, stains from it, and any splashes are better visible. If the room is poorly ventilated and equipped with an open shower, then regular cleaning of the glossy surface will be required.

Matte products look discreet and can be used to create classic or delicate compositions. Such a ceiling does not distract from other decorations in the room, highlights the beauty of the lamps, and helps to set the mood for relaxation and unwind. But a matte surface will emphasize the height of the room and its parameters, so it is more suitable for a spacious bathroom.

The matte finish gives a feeling of warmth and comfort. It is easier to care for, because on such a surface the accumulation of steam or minor water splashes is practically unnoticeable. However, it looks simple and will not harmonize with bright decorative touches or expensive products.

Perforated and solid slats

Perforation in the form of many small holes on the surface of the rail has special meaning In bathroom. If the room has poor ventilation and small size, then perforation helps moisture rise above the level suspension system and settle on the plaster, being partially absorbed. Due to this, you can avoid the accumulation of moisture on the surface and slightly reduce the feeling of humidity.

However, such a solution requires high-quality antifungal treatment of the surface before installing the slats and strengthening the moisture-proof layer of the electrical wiring hidden behind the hanging structure.

But behind the perforated surface you can hide the air ducts of your home’s climate system, thereby eliminating excess humidity.

Perforations can decorate a room, for modern style this is a great move. But for rooms with low ceilings, with classic interior or a very small area, such a surface is not suitable.

Smooth panels are easier to work with and have a more versatile design. However, with a solid canvas, you need to pay more attention to the ventilation of the room, planning it before installing the ceiling.

Lighting Features

It is with the choice of lamps that the planning of all work begins. For slatted ceilings, built-in spotlights are used, which can have different sizes and include the use different types light bulbs

Type of light bulbs used:

  • incandescent lamps;
  • glow plugs;
  • halogen;
  • LED;
  • luminescent.

Light bulbs differ in power, energy consumption, level luminous flux . Modern light bulbs provide lighting close to natural and have low energy consumption. I won't dwell on detailed description options, this is the topic of a separate article.

However, only after choosing lamps with suitable lamps can you begin to calculate their quantity.

Based on the room's need for light and the performance of specific light bulbs, you can calculate how many lamps are required. IN good store lighting fixtures will help you make calculations on the area of the bathroom and the height of the walls.

When the number of lighting points and the required installation height have been calculated, you need to draw a diagram of their location. Here you can either turn to a designer for help or figure out on your own where the lamps should be located. Electrical wiring is laid in special cable channels before installation of the suspended elements begins.

When assembling the ceiling, you will need to cut holes in the slats to suit the width of the lamps, taking into account the lighting scheme. Therefore, it is especially important to ensure that lighting points do not appear at the junction of two levels.

Advice

Try to arrange the lamps so that each is either exactly in the middle between two panels, or in the center of one. To make this possible, the width of the selected slats must be known before drawing up the lighting scheme.

Slat ceiling design in the bathroom

In order to choose “your” design, it is worth considering three main parameters:

  • Element color.
  • Complexity of design.
  • Direction of slats.

The beauty of a slatted ceiling is that no matter how complex its design may seem, installation remains quite simple. Therefore, you can safely choose any option you like and bring it to life.

Color of visible structural elements

When buying slats, you can find an incredible number of colors.. There are even quite a few shades of white, from snow-white to milky. Metallic shades are often found, from golden to steel. You will rarely see gray, beige, black. But if you wish, you can even find yellow, red, green slats.

Different colors can be combined by using two shades of panels and laying inter-slat inserts of a different tone. I want to talk about the most common combinations that have repeatedly proven their viability in real life.

White color

Simple white ceiling The good thing is that it matches any wall and floor decoration and visually slightly increases the volume of space. The versatility of this solution can hardly be overestimated. Moreover, you can make it either a seamless fabric or with inter-slat inserts of different shades.

Popular inserts in metallic shades:

  • chromium;
  • silver;
  • steel;
  • gold.

This decor looks bright, but goes well with plumbing elements and can be used in different compositions. However, the volume effect that occurs when transitioning from white to darker stripes is only suitable for rooms with ceilings of at least 2.7.

Contrasting solutions

If bright tiles are used in the bathroom: red, orange, green, blue, then inter-slat inserts of the same shade on a white background look impressive. Such experiments within the framework of modern style allow you to make the bathroom interesting and breathe life into it without unnecessary decor.

White inserts look unusual on a dark or mirrored steel background. White visually evens out the glare surface, lightens the structure, preventing the ceiling from looking gloomy. With their help you can emphasize the height of the walls.

IN complex structures at different levels and even in the same plane, two different basic shades can converge. Combinations that look good:

  • white with silver;
  • white with gold;
  • white with steel;
  • black and chrome.

For a large bathroom, you can use all the colors of the rainbow, complementing them with white. Contrasting combinations require consultation from a designer, since you can choose them yourself required quantity two different colors difficult.

Soft color combinations

Light, muted shades of any color can be combined with a white base or light inter-slat inserts. Mint, olive, beige, blue, lilac ceilings look beautiful, correspond to modern, classic style. You can experiment more boldly with them, since soft transitions from light tones to white are not striking.

Combinations of different shades of gray, black and dark gray, also look calm. An unusual dark ceiling with a combination of two shades looks more voluminous and interesting. The soft transition here ensures the visual lightness of the structure.

Use of complex structures

Rack and pinion suspended ceiling can be multi-level if the height of the room allows. The frame for such a structure is not much more complicated than a single-level one, but the design becomes more interesting. In addition, a two-level solution allows you to close the volumetric part of communications, or layout flaws.

In a spacious bathroom, using two levels, you can visually divide the room into domestic and procedural parts. You can experiment with lighting by placing light sources between levels (for example, using LED strips).

The second level can go in a “wave” and can have strict geometric shapes. But an important issue in its formation will be the location of the slats relative to the first level. So, the slats of both levels can go in the same direction if the shape of the room is rectangular and it is necessary to visually expand it.

But there are options where slats of two levels go perpendicular to each other, or even at a certain angle .

It is important to be careful not to get a feeling of chaos and disharmony instead of an unusual composition.

Direction of slats

The simplest option is to lay the panels in one direction. As a rule, installation is carried out in width so as not to create the effect of a narrow room. However, you can safely compose more complex compositions.
