In this article I will look at the pros and cons of a threshold on a balcony. I will list the materials for the balcony threshold. I’ll tell you how to make a threshold for a balcony yourself.

Pros and cons of the threshold to the balcony

The threshold to the balcony has its advantages:

  • Is additional protection from cold penetration into the room;
  • Facilitates the transition from room to balcony;
  • Improves the aesthetic appearance of the balcony door and the adjacent room.

Also, the height of the threshold on the balcony is often made lower than required. And as a result, when moving to the balcony, you can trip over the remaining height under the door. At correct calculations And installation work This design has no disadvantages.

If there is no threshold, then from under the door leading to the balcony or even glazed loggia, will constantly blow

Manufacturing materials

For self-made the threshold to the balcony is used various materials. It is chosen based on your preferences or by selecting the door material.

Brick

An ideal option for creating a threshold where the distance from the door to the floor is very large. It is easy to fill this volume with brick, unlike, for example, cement mortar.It’s pretty quick to make from brick. The main thing is to clear the surface and putty it before laying. Then lay the bricks in several layers, fastening them with cement mortar. It can also be finished with tiles or linoleum.

Balcony threshold made of sand-lime bricks helps with large differences surface heights

Concrete mortar

If there is a slight discrepancy, a solution of sand and cement will be ideal for arrangement. It is made by pouring ready-made mortar into the formwork.

The height of the formwork should be slightly higher than the threshold.

Installing a threshold on a balcony door and tiling it

Tree

Wood is used for any amount of flow between the door and the floor. This material is easy to work with. It is enough to create a frame of a suitable size and attach it to the floor. Then cover it with boards.

Using a plastic window sill

A plastic threshold looks most aesthetically pleasing if the balcony door itself is made of plastic.

The plastic threshold for the balcony fits perfectly into the interior of the room

All the work consists of creating guides from self-tapping screws. A plastic window sill is then put on them.

In almost a year you will have to change it.

To plastic version from the window sill sat firmly in place; it is recommended to secure it with mounting foam. This will create an additional barrier to the cold.

Laminate

A fairly popular material is laminate. It can be used as independent decision with minimal differences. Or as finishing from other materials. Laminate is also popular due to the fact that the material is rich in colors.

Finishing the balcony threshold with laminate

How to do it yourself

Before starting work, you need to prepare the necessary materials and tools. Thus, to organize from concrete mortar you will need:

  • Beam for formwork.
  • Cement.
  • Sand.
  • Gypsum.
  • Container for mixing the solution.
  • Water.
  • Spatula and trowel.
  • Putty.

Tiling the threshold on the balcony

Installation is done in several stages:

  • First of all, it is recommended to dismantle the old one if there is one. Or clean the territory of the future from dirt and dust.
  • After which it is necessary to putty the perimeter. It is better to choose a rough putty. This will create additional adhesion to the solution.
  • The next step is to make formwork from three boards so that the open side fits tightly to the side of the balcony. The formwork parameters fully correspond to the dimensions future design. It is recommended to make the height slightly higher than the expected threshold.
  • Then you need to mix 1 part cement with 3 parts sand. Also add about 10-15% gypsum to make the solution set faster. Mix the mixture well so that there are no lumps.
  • If it is high, then it is better to fall asleep at the bottom broken brick. This will make the structure stronger. If it is low, then this may not be done.
  • Carefully pour the solution into the formwork and level the surface.
  • It will take a day for the cement to set, but it is better to wait 1.5 days. While the solution dries, it is necessary to level the surface several more times.
  • After complete drying, the formwork must be disassembled and removed. Sand the seams.
  • After which you can finish the finished structure with tiles or laminate as you wish.

For finishing you can use any floor covering. It is also recommended to choose the color of the finish to match the floor covering in the room.

An option on how to make a threshold for a balcony

The threshold to the balcony performs not only an aesthetic function, but also prevents the penetration of cold into the room. You can make it yourself from almost any material in a short time.

Making a threshold for a balcony door: what material to choose

After installing the balcony door, you should take care of the threshold. Installing a threshold on a balcony door is not as simple as it might seem, as there are many nuances. Next, we’ll look at how to do everything correctly and avoid mistakes.

The balcony threshold has two purposes:

  1. Aesthetic – appearance doors with a threshold are better.
  2. Insulating – in winter time Less cold air penetrates.

Before starting work, you should think about how to finish the threshold on the balcony. You can view various photos.

You can choose one of the following materials:

  • plastic;
  • tree;
  • brick (it is better to take silicate);
  • mortar of cement and sand.

Dismantling

It is easier to remove the threshold on the balcony than to build a new one, however, there are some peculiarities here too. Disassemble wooden crafts quite simple. The situation is different with a threshold made of brick. In this case, you need to work with a hammer and chisel and do everything very carefully. If you can’t do anything with these tools, then you need to take a hammer drill.

To work near a wall, it is better to use a grinder with a stone attachment. It happens that some places cannot be reached using a disk. Then the remains of the old threshold are removed with a hammer and chisel. It is better to work in a respirator and special glasses, since dismantling a brick threshold can generate a lot of dust.

Plastic threshold for balcony door

The plastic threshold for the balcony looks great, but it is short-lived. Installation of such a threshold will not take more than one day. All you need to do is install everything using self-tapping screws on the profile necessary details. You should use polyurethane foam to make a layer.

PVC window sills are the best material for plastic thresholds. You can purchase them at almost any building materials store. PVC window sills are durable and can support the weight of an adult. The door in combination with a beautiful threshold looks completely different.

Wooden threshold

The wooden trim of the balcony door threshold has one very important advantage: it almost does not let cold air into the room. You can achieve a better effect if you use high-quality mineral wool as insulation.

The sheathing is made from wooden blocks. Then it is firmly attached to the floor. For cladding, you can use a pressed board wood shavings(OSB). It can withstand heavy loads without deforming.

For construction wooden threshold you will need the following Construction Materials:

  • hardwood timber;
  • OSB sheet;
  • wood screws;
  • driving screws with dowels;
  • corners to connect the timber to the floor.

And also tools:

The sheathing is made from the prepared timber. Its size must correspond to the size of the balcony threshold. To fasten the frame, it is necessary to use self-tapping screws twice as long as the width of the beam.

The finished sheathing is placed in place of the threshold and marks are made along the inside with a pencil. By internal corners Holes for dowels are drilled in the floor. You also need to make holes in the corner of the beams. Next, the frame is installed in place and secured to the floor. In this way, the sheathing is fixed firmly and reliably.

The next step is to cut out a sheet of OSB of the required size, place it on the sheathing and screw it to it with wood screws. Before fixing the sheet, the threshold can be insulated with polystyrene foam or mineral wool. How finishing layer you can use linoleum or laminate.

Brick threshold

Brick is used when the height of the balcony door threshold is large enough. Due to the thickness of the brick, the difference between the floor and door block will be quickly resolved. This option will save you money cash on cement-sand mortar. You should pay attention to the height of the brick, if too high altitude the door won't open. For cladding, choose a laminate or make a tile threshold for the balcony; you can also lay tiles.

To build a brick threshold, you will need the following building materials:

And also these tools:

Before starting work, it is necessary to remove all dirt and dust from the site of the future threshold, and then thoroughly wash the floor. Next, everything should be primed well. This is necessary to increase adhesion. It is better to choose a primer that becomes slightly rough after drying. Next, the solution is prepared by mixing cement and sand in a ratio of 1:3. To reduce the hardening time, isogypsum or satengypsum is added to the solution. To thoroughly mix the mixture, it is better to use a drill with a “mixer” attachment.

Using a spatula, the solution is applied to the primed floor, as well as to the edges of the bricks, so that they are bonded not only to the floor, but also to each other.

A perforated corner is installed on the corner of the bricks, and a metal beacon is installed on the door. Fix them with a solution. Everything must be done so that there are no voids left.

Threshold made of cement-sand mortar

It is advisable to use a sand-cement mixture if balcony threshold short. Of the listed options for decorating a balcony threshold, this one is the simplest and fastest. First, formwork is constructed in height equal to the future threshold. To make the threshold more durable, you should use gravel or crushed brick.

Before filling the threshold with the solution, it is necessary to putty the floor surface. Then formwork is installed in place of the threshold. The same solution is prepared as for laying bricks. The finished solution is poured into the formwork. The surface should be well leveled. Read also: “How to make a threshold at front door and from what material.”

When the concrete has hardened, the threshold on the balcony door can be covered with any floor covering you like.

There are several options for making a balcony threshold. Each person makes his choice based on the preferences and characteristics of the balcony threshold.

Threshold to the balcony: made of plastic and ceramic tiles

After installing a double-glazed window with a door to the balcony, it is necessary to carry out final work on installing the threshold. This unit performs an important function - it prevents cold from entering the room. But one should not forget about the aesthetic component - this required condition proper repair. At a minimum, the threshold to the balcony must be decorated carefully, otherwise the entire effect fresh interior will be spoiled. If desired and possible, it can be made the highlight of the room.

Work on finishing the threshold can be carried out independently, even with little experience in construction and finishing work.

Installing a plastic threshold on point supports

PVC plastic(the same one that is used for window sills) is the simplest and most inexpensive solution when decorating a threshold for a balcony door. There is an opinion that it bends, and therefore is not suitable for installation on surfaces that are intended to be stepped on. But this only happens if the installation technology is violated. Two installation methods are practiced:

  • on point supports– the cheapest and fastest;
  • on a slab of mortar or polystyrene foam– more expensive and labor-intensive.

Let's consider the first method in detail. It is convenient because it does not require preliminary leveling of the base and the cost of mixtures or slabs. Installation of such a structure can be completed in a few hours. Sequence of work:

Installing a plastic threshold on a pre-built slab is done in the same way.

Original tile threshold

Ceramic tile flooring is durable and easy to maintain. If you choose this type of material to finish the threshold, then in this case you cannot do without preliminary construction of the base, which can be done in several ways.

Brick base

This option is justified if the difference between the floor and the doorway is large enough (no less than the height of the brick). Please note that a layer of leveling mixture and finishing tiles will be applied to the brick - the height of the threshold is in finished form should not block the door. Main stages of work:

Filling the base with mortar

When you need to get a threshold of a smaller height than the size of the brick, it is rational to use this method. Many masters prefer it in most cases due to its ease of execution. The work is carried out in the following sequence:

Selecting and laying tiles

Among the wide variety finishing materials You can easily choose an option that suits the overall style and design of the room. There is no need to buy expensive brands for this area. Residual and even defective lots with different shades or chips are suitable - such material can be purchased at a significant discount. Tastefully selected details of different textures and colors and mosaics look original. The main thing is not to choose glossy surfaces - they can be very slippery.

You can tile not only the horizontal surface of the step, but also the partition underneath it, as well as the area of the floor adjacent to the door. It all depends on the taste of the owners and the characteristics of the room. Laying is done in the following sequence:

    Carefully take measurements, calculate the quantity, draw a layout diagram. Symmetrical styling looks better and neater, especially on large slabs. There should be whole parts in the middle, equally trimmed on the sides.

The asymmetry is striking

  • Cut the tiles using a tile cutter or grinder.
  • Coat each part with special glue and place it on the finished base in accordance with the diagram. Insert crosses between the tiles - this way the seams will be smooth and uniform. Control the laying process with a level.
  • After hardening, remove excess glue and fill the seams with grout mixture.

    Other types of materials

    For finishing other materials can be used for the threshold on the balcony door:

    So, it’s not difficult to give a finished look to a balcony door. Think carefully design solution, and then carry out the work correctly - as a result, the room with a balcony will become even more cozy and comfortable.

    How to make a threshold on the balcony and decorate it with your own hands

    After the installation of the door facing the balcony is completed, it becomes necessary to make a threshold. Although not everyone attaches this element special significance, however, a high-quality transition device can eliminate many problems, for example, trapping cold air.

    When installing a door opening onto a balcony, the question usually arises of how to make a threshold on the balcony. Solving this problem is actually not difficult if you follow the recommendations of experienced master builders.

    Purpose of the balcony threshold

    Not every resident of an apartment building fully understands why this strange “step” between the balcony and the room adjacent to it is needed. She actually has several appointments.

      Strengthens the entire balcony structure. If there is already a threshold, you can only correct it if desired, but under no circumstances remove it. Provide additional thermal insulation, since one polyurethane foam, as a rule, is not enough to keep the room warm, especially if the balcony is not glazed and not insulated.

    If the balcony door is installed at the same level as the floor, then cold air can be blown into the apartment through the gap, and it will be extremely difficult to insulate such an area. Therefore, heat can be preserved if you raise the door a little and build a transition.

      Eliminate heat loss through foam areas where cold bridges can form. Protects against moisture caused by external factors. Rainwater that gets onto an unglazed balcony can flow into the room through the cracks, and the threshold can prevent this. They provide a smooth transition, which reduces the likelihood of tripping over the threshold structure and makes the transition through the balcony door more comfortable. They add aesthetics to the doors to the loggia or balcony and increase their visual appeal.

    Setting a threshold has many nuances. Accordingly, how to make a threshold on a balcony correctly is a rather important task. Transitions may differ in size, height, material and shape. They are most often rectangular because they are easier to install and use.

    Technology for installing a threshold on a loggia and balcony

    on the picture different variants threshold on the loggia

    Let's consider various options for making thresholds.

    Cement

    To install a low threshold on the balcony, it is advisable to use a cement mixture. This is the simplest and quick option execution of a similar design.

      Work begins with clearing the area for the future location of the balcony threshold, marking its contours and measuring its dimensions and height. Formwork is constructed from several wooden blocks of the required size, securing them in the designated places. The formwork must correspond to the selected height of the future transition. To strengthen the threshold, gravel or crushed bricks are often used. Prepare a solution by taking three parts of sand to one part of cement, and pour it into the structure to the level of its upper boundary. Excess concrete mortar that extends beyond the formwork is removed with a trowel.

    The newly created area will adhere more firmly if the side surfaces of the wall are rougher.

      Finishing of the threshold begins after the concrete has completely hardened, in about a day. For finishing, you can use any floor covering, for example, tiles.

    Brick

    This option is great for smoothing the transition from the floor to the door frame when the door level is much higher. Thickness sand-lime brick enough to eliminate such a discrepancy and at the same time you can still save on cement mortar.

    When using this material to create a balcony threshold, a certain technology is followed:

      Mark the location of the future threshold and clean it of all kinds of dirt and debris. You may need a spatula for this work. The cleaned surface is primed several times. It is better to opt for a primer that forms a rough surface after drying. This will help ensure better adhesion of the brick to the mortar. This can be a plaster mixture diluted with water (for 1 kg of dry plaster mixture - half a liter of water). It is laid in a layer of 1 cm. The bricks are laid on cement mortar. Experienced craftsmen advise adding gypsum mixture to it. In this case, setting will take place much faster. The solution is applied in an even layer, then the bricks are laid on it as tightly as possible, lightly moistening them with water to begin with. To fasten them to each other, you also need to coat the sides of the bricks. Lightly tapping the material with a trowel will help to achieve a good fit. Work continues after the structure has completely dried.

    When installing thresholds, turning the door slopes sometimes does not allow them to normally occupy its area. In this case, the angle is knocked down. For example, they cut down the outer bricks with a hammer.

      To decorate the corner of the bricks, a T-shaped perforated corner is used, and a small (about 0.5 mm) beacon is installed on the door side. They are “frozen” using the prepared solution. After the solution has set - it will only take a couple of minutes - pour plaster mortar. To ensure that the surface is as even as possible, the solution is leveled along the way with a spatula. The surface should not be particularly rubbed, but there should be no voids left. When the solution on the threshold dries, it is primed with a primer deep penetration and again left to dry.

    Threshold made of OSB boards on a wooden frame

    Unlike previous options, this threshold retains the cold and does not let it into the room. It can be additionally insulated, which will be another advantage of the design. It can be removed if necessary.

      To begin with, a frame of the appropriate size is mounted from the beams. It is also recommended to place the beam in the middle. The sides of the frame are fastened with self-tapping screws approximately 1.5 times the thickness of the timber. At corner joints, these are slope turns; the ends are cut using a hacksaw. The finished frame is placed in place of the future threshold and marked internal line, along which the frame will be attached. Mark the locations of the holes for the dowels and drill them using an impact drill, and screw the frame using wood screws. The dimensions are marked on the OSB sheet and cut out with a hacksaw and fixed with self-tapping screws. The plate must be carefully adjusted. The skin is strong enough, so the threshold will not sag under weight load.

    If desired, the threshold can be insulated, say, with mineral wool.

    Threshold to the balcony from the window sill

    The plastic threshold attracts with its low cost, simplicity and good heat-insulating qualities. It is often supplied complete with plastic window and balcony blocks. This material has some flexibility, so if it is not of high quality, it can quickly break when it is stepped on a lot. Choosing good quality plastic will avoid problems.

      The base is cleaned, excess foam is cut off. Measure the opening and cut out the appropriate profile from the window sill. They try it on and determine the height of the threshold, which determines the method of fixation. If the height difference does not exceed 10 mm, then the threshold is usually placed on foam. The threshold is carefully glued onto the compound applied in an even layer and pressed down with a weight. The polyurethane foam is not applied too liberally. This is due to the fact that during the polymerization process the foam expands, which can cause the structure to rise. When the foam hardens, you need to inspect the resulting structure for any cracks. Through them, moisture can penetrate into the space under the threshold. Any cracks found are sealed using silicone sealant white. The ends are closed with plugs.
      If the height difference is more than 10 mm, the threshold is assembled at point supports from bars or plastic plates. Before fixing the structure, it is checked for compliance with the level and for deflection. You should walk around it a little. After making sure that the threshold on the balcony is strong enough and its position corresponds to the level, the threshold is removed and its surface is moistened with water. Foam is applied to the supporting point supports in the form of transverse and longitudinal strips, and the plastic blank is pressed. For better fixation, a weight is placed on the threshold.

    As a rule, installing a threshold on a balcony door is the final stage of installation and finishing of the balcony block (door). In the vast majority of cases, professional installers offer the manufacture of thresholds from PVC material– a window sill board that is mounted on an existing threshold.

    Window sill boards have both their advantages and disadvantages. The first includes the aesthetic appearance of the balcony block, especially if the PVC profile has a color other than white, in such cases the threshold from the PVC window sill panel looks like a single whole with everything balcony block. This threshold is easy to care for, it does not absorb moisture, and is easy to clean. The disadvantages include: fragility, rapid wear, especially if the balcony is used every day, almost inevitable creaking that develops as such a threshold is used, severe freezing, since plastic is a poor heat insulator...

    Why do you need a threshold?

    Arranging a threshold in front of a balcony door has several purposes. Firstly, it allows you to smooth out the difference in height between the floor and balcony profile, that is, to make the process of going out to the balcony more convenient. Secondly, it seals the place of foaming of the lower gap between the doorway of the wall and the door frame, this simultaneously eliminates a possible “cold bridge” that can form at the place of foaming, and enhances waterproofing, since the foam can become saturated with water during operation and moisture can enter the apartment, under the floor covering.

    These and other reasons sometimes make it necessary to install thresholds in front of the balcony door from other materials.

    They may be:

    • brick;
    • cement mortar;
    • metal profile covered with moisture-resistant plasterboard;
    • a wooden block with chipboard (OSB) laid on it, or made of boards.

    The design of each of these types of thresholds has its own characteristics, which we will describe below.

    Flood threshold

    The easiest thing to install is a threshold filled with cement-sand mortar. To arrange it, it is necessary to clear the space in front of the balcony door from the floor covering, if any, remove the laminate or parquet boards so that the space between the slopes and from the level of the wall to the door frame can be filled with mortar. The base on which the threshold will be installed should be cleaned of construction dust, primed twice with acrylic or silicate primer, which will completely bind the remaining dust and in the future will not allow the filled threshold to peel off from the base.

    After the primer has dried, it will be necessary to arrange the formwork. IN in this case One board, 2.54 cm thick and the appropriate width, screwed or pressed with heavy objects flush with the wall in which the balcony door is installed, will be enough. The solution is prepared from a mixture construction sand and cement grade 200-400. The proportion is standard: 1 part cement / 3 parts sand. To increase the speed of setting and give the threshold additional moisture-repellent properties, you can add liquid glass to the solution.

    The threshold can be made of any height, but if it is high enough, you can use expanded clay gravel or broken red brick as a filler, which is laid in one layer in the resulting niche and filled with mortar on top.

    After the solution has set, it is allowed to gain strength, that is, the use of such a threshold should begin no earlier than 5-7 days after pouring. When the solution has completely set, the outer formwork is removed, and the threshold itself can be finished with laminate or linoleum, or lined with ceramic tiles or decorative stone.

    If the door is wide, more than 80 cm, or the balcony door design is sliding (French doors), then the threshold should be filled in two stages.

    First pour half the thickness of the mixture, then lay it on it masonry mesh(metal) by tying the individual sheets together with steel wire, and then pour the threshold to the required height.

    Brick threshold

    In order to save cement, especially when the difference between the floor and the lower edge of the balcony frame is large enough, you can use brick (it doesn’t matter what kind). The preparation of the base is carried out in the same way as for the flood threshold. No formwork is required, but when working, you may need a “grinder” with a cutting wheel for stone to adjust the bricks to size.

    The laying is carried out using cement mortar prepared in the same proportions as for pouring. After the solution has set, you can begin to use such a threshold within a day. The finishing of the brick threshold is also done depending on the design concept of the room.

    Threshold made of metal profile

    In some cases, when it comes to arranging a door threshold of a complex (not rectilinear) shape, it is necessary to use a metal profile used for installing plasterboard and waterproof plasterboard with a thickness of at least 10 mm. No preparation of the base is required, except for cleaning it from excess construction debris and dust.

    According to the pattern, or markings on the floor, a metal profile is mounted to the base, screwed to concrete base screws into the dowel or anchors, then set vertical racks required height, fastened to the profile using fastening units and metal screws, and then an upper horizontal contour, symmetrical to the lower one. It should be taken into account that the threshold will be under constant load, therefore the number of fasteners and the frequency of their location when arranging the threshold should be increased by at least 3 times, compared with the recommended frequency of their use when facing plasterboard walls or ceiling.

    For additional thermal insulation, the space between the concrete base and the upper plasterboard panel of the threshold is filled with mineral wool or backfilled expanded clay gravel. If the threshold being installed has curved lines, the facing of the end surfaces should be made of ordinary (non-moisture-resistant) plasterboard 5 mm thick, previously soaked in water, to give it flexibility. After installation, the end part of the threshold should be puttied with oil-adhesive putty to impart water-repellent properties.

    Wooden threshold

    The installation of a wooden threshold is also similar to the installation of a plasterboard threshold. To fasten wooden blocks to a concrete base, holes are drilled in them according to the diameter of the anchors, 100-150 mm long - depending on the thickness of the block, the bars are laid out on the base and, using a nail or a thin punch, through the drilled holes, the places for drilling the base are marked. After this, the block is removed.

    Hammer or impact drill holes of the required depth are drilled. After which the block is put back into place and the fastening units of the anchors are driven in and tightened. An option for fastening with self-tapping screws is possible, then polyethylene dowels are pre-inserted into the drilled holes.

    Subsequent finishing

    The installed threshold usually requires additional finishing. It can be laminate, parquet, ceramic tiles or just linoleum. It all depends on what kind of covering you have on the floor and whether you want the threshold to stand out as an element of the balcony block or, on the contrary, you want it to have the same texture as the floor.

    All types of materials that are used to make thresholds can be finished with any of the materials listed above. It may be somewhat difficult to select adhesive composition for covering wood with ceramic tiles. But for this there are many polymer mastics and adhesives that provide excellent adhesion (gluing) to any of the known building materials.

    Let's sum it up

    Independent arrangement of the threshold in front of the door leading to the balcony is enough labor-intensive process, which can take several hours. Therefore, you should start it when you have free time. In case of filling the threshold concrete mortar– it is advisable to perform it at a time when you do not plan to use the balcony for several days, so as not to step on the solution that has not yet hardened.

    After installing a door on a balcony, there is always a desire to make the threshold efficiently and practically. And when it comes to performance criteria quality option threshold, then it is worth considering a number of tips that will allow you to fully answer the question of how to make a threshold for a balcony yourself - various options. After all, the importance of this design will allow you to create the required type of decor and select the material to complete this element.

    Significant advantages of balcony thresholds

    This structural element has a number of advantages that allow you to more fully exploit the balcony space. It is worth noting that Constructive decisions and the correctly selected material will provide a number of advantages, namely:

    • The ability to limit the penetration of moisture and dampness.
    • With option open balconies. Indeed, during precipitation, some of the water may remain on the surface of the balcony and penetrate into the room. A correctly executed threshold will provide a barrier and protection internal space premises.
    • Using a threshold allows you to remove cold bridges and limit freezing of the surface if the balcony is not insulated. It also provides additional support for placing the door and a certain fixation process.
    • The practicality of the location of the threshold will allow you to visually divide the space of the room and the balcony, allowing you to move from each room more practically.

    An important process is that its reliability in operation depends on the choice of fastening method.

    Materials for making thresholds

    Correctly selected material for making a threshold for a balcony. This will prevent its rapid abrasion and will give a reason to perform all the functions assigned to this element. And here it is worth carefully dividing your choice decorative solution or the creation of a significant obstacle, in the form of a threshold in doorway balcony

    The main materials for the threshold will be:

    • Brickwork;
    • Cement-sand mortar;
    • Based on laminated boards;
    • Made from .

    Each of the proposed options has its own design features. At the same time, not every room will be suitable for one or another version of the threshold, since subsequently the entire room will be finished and a more relevant transformation of the space will be created. Therefore, it is worth paying more attention to the choice of material, taking into account the specifics and functionality of the room where this element will be located.

    Using brick as a base

    In cases where there is a significant difference in height between the room and the balcony space, additional support for the mounted door frame is required. And the choice is in favor brickwork will be very visible. After all, the implementation of this kind of design will allow you to firmly place the door and create the necessary developments for the subsequent decoration of the doorway. Execution of this type construction work will require the following operations, taking into account which a strong and durable threshold based on brickwork will be formed.

    Namely:

    • The relevance of the threshold implementation will be detailed measurements, which will allow further placement door frame and correctly remove the significant difference in the two rooms.
    • Next, you should practically and efficiently clean the existing area where the brick is located, removing dried mortar or other dirt. After which a primer is applied and sprayed for uniform adhesion cement-sand mortar and the existing foundation.
    • When making brickwork, it is worth using a cement-sand mortar, which will allow you to combine each of the placed bricks and create a reliable bond with the existing concrete base.
    • It is worth noting that the masonry should be made of brick, which is not subject to excessive moisture absorption and air accumulation inside itself, and the existing holes will allow you to create a solution for heat exchange during the subsequent operation of the threshold.
    • After laying the brick and evenly distributing the mortar, you should also worry about finishing the surface. And here you can resort to using tiles or decorative adhesive. Due to this, the threshold will acquire an unusually attractive and practical appearance.

    It will also be important to complete all necessary tool and building materials, through which it will be possible to begin the required construction work.

    • Mixer, stirring the adhesive base or cement-sand mortar;
    • Perforated corner, if necessary, creating an ideal threshold contour;
    • Adhesive solution, or cement-sand mixture;
    • Spatula, for uniform distribution of the solution or adhesive composition;
    • Hammer for even placement of bricks;
    • Plaster or, for the final finishing of the threshold;
    • Level, creation of a flat surface and control of the threshold being laid;
    • Tape measure, displaying the dimensions and required threshold parameters.

    In this case, it will be possible to qualitatively complete the threshold on the balcony without worrying about a lack of tools or inappropriate quality control of the resulting solution. The created threshold will be able to perfectly perform its functions and change the options for using the balcony room.

    It is worth noting that when making a balcony threshold made of brick from the outside, you need to take care of additional sealing. This will be necessary in case of open options balconies and the possibility of moisture ingress.

    Preparatory stage of arrangement

    It is worth noting that it is important to prepare the base of the future threshold, which is experiencing a decent load, and simply blowing foam into the voids is not the best option.

    1. In the case of a minimum height difference in two rooms, the threshold in front of the balcony can be made by first completing the appropriate measurement procedures and preparing the base. And it will also require the creation of formwork and minimal reinforcement.
    2. First of all, it is worthwhile to thoroughly process and clean the surface where the mortar is placed, then drill the required amount of reinforcement around the perimeter and lay the masonry mesh. Due to this, the strong and reliable main structure will be stripped and the threshold structure will be unified with the existing floor base.
    3. After this, you will need to assemble a minimum formwork made of wood, for the subsequent solution of cement-sand mortar. And here it is worth understanding that it is important to assemble the box efficiently, ensuring that the mixture does not flow out of it. For this separate areas adjacent to uneven walls can be sealed with sealants around the perimeter of the formwork.
    4. After which the cement-sand mixture is mixed, it is important to prepare a solution that is not very liquid.
    5. The result will be a durable surface for the ideal appearance of the threshold. After drying, it will be possible to finish the threshold with tiles or laminate.

    Tiling the threshold

    Tile is perhaps the best and unpretentious option for arranging a threshold for a balcony or loggia.

    In the process of tiling the threshold, it is important to use a level and perfectly align the surface of each element with the installed door. This will not only create a smooth surface, but also provide extraordinary real option decor. In this case, to fix the tiles, you should use a special adhesive solution, which is evenly applied to the surface of each element.

    Threshold made of plastic and laminate

    If there are no height differences, the optimal solution may be a laminate threshold. The solution will also make it possible to constructively highlight the doorway to the balcony and provide a visual combination of the material and the floor.

    Using a PVC window sill

    Today there is a large number of ready-made solutions based on plastic and PVC window sills. Allowing you to install, taking into account the width of the doorway this design on concrete main.

    To do this, you will need to securely attach it to the tile adhesive solution, provided that the base is level, this will be more reliable than polyurethane foam.

    Specialization: master in construction plasterboard structures, finishing work and installation floor coverings. Installation of door and window units, finishing of facades, installation of electrical, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

    The threshold to the balcony is the place where two different rooms, and in this area there are often significant differences in height. If you do not refine this part of the structure and make it more convenient for use, then you risk stumbling over a protruding door frame for years.

    It is much easier, after installing the balcony block, to build a comfortable and safe platform or even steps (this also happens if the height difference is too large), this is what I will talk about in the review.

    Work options

    From the title it is clear that I will talk about four options for carrying out the work, each of them has proven its reliability, so you need to choose the one that best suits your design. And the surrounding interior should be taken into account, because if you have wood trim, then installing plastic is at least unwise.

    Method 1 - building a brick threshold

    This option was previously used everywhere, in Soviet time no one came up with it at all simple solutions: “Since everyone is laying brick, it means it’s right,” the developers reasoned and built a threshold for the balcony from this material.

    But even today this solution is often used; it is most suitable in the following situations:

    • When the height difference between the balcony door frame and the opening is very large. Often installers lay down a brick when installing a balcony block, in this case ask them to position it so that it stands level, and you can then lay the rest of the space without problems;

    • If the opening is severely damaged and its strength is of concern, this happens in old houses. It’s easier to lay the threshold with a brick; it will definitely strengthen the plane, and it will not crack and crumble under loads.

    This work option can only be used if the difference is at least a few centimeters greater than the height of the brick. You will need to level the surface and then finish it, and if the height is not enough, then your threshold may be higher than the door frame.

    For work we will need the following materials:

    Brick Most often you need several pieces, many advise using the silicate version, but, in my opinion, other types are no worse. The strength of any of the types is enough for the eyes; it will withstand much more than the weight of a person
    Masonry mortar I could advise you to buy cement, dig up sand and mix the solution yourself, but it is much easier to buy a bag ready-made composition, which just needs to be diluted with water and used for its intended purpose. The price of a bag weighing 25 kg is approximately 250 rubles, and we don’t need more
    Perforated corner We need a piece to level the corner, but the corner is sold only in pieces of 2.5-3 meters, we will have to buy a whole one. The cost of this product is cheap, so high costs you won't bear it
    Primer It can be used to pre-treat the surface if it is too loose. Also, the primer is applied to the finished result after the solution has dried, this is necessary to strengthen the surface, sand stops coming from it, and absorbency decreases

    In order for the solution to harden faster, you can add a little (10-15%) gypsum; no more is needed. If you overdo it, you will have to work hard with the solution, and most likely it will harden faster than you can use it.

    We can’t do without a tool:

    • To prepare the solution you need a container and a drill with a mixer attachment. But, as a last resort, we can do without a power tool, then we will need a strong stick with which we will vigorously stir the mixture;
    • The mortar can be applied to the brick either with a mason's trowel or with a spatula; the amount of work is small, so use what you have. It is convenient to use a spatula to level the surface at the end of work; this is also important;
    • Most likely, in some places you will have to put pieces of brick; the easiest way is to beat it to the required size with a mason’s hammer; we don’t need perfect accuracy, but there won’t be a column of dust, as when cutting with a grinder;

    Instructions on how to make a threshold on a balcony look like this:

    • First of all, it is necessary to clean the base of debris and dust; if there are sagging solutions, protruding areas and protrusions on it, then they need to be removed. Try to prepare the surface as best as possible - the smoother it is, the easier it will be for you to carry out the work. If there are sagging foam, then they must be carefully and evenly cut off with a sharp construction knife;

    • Then the masonry mortar is prepared, this is done as described in the instructions on the package, everything is very simple, and the main thing is to maintain the proportions of water and mixture. It is important to mix the mass well so that there are no lumps or unmixed areas left in it, it should be uniform;
    • The mortar is applied under the base of the brick. After which it needs to be spread on end side so that the seams are also filled with the mixture. The laying is carried out in one layer, so there is nothing complicated in the work - lay an even layer and carefully press the elements;

    • If necessary, the brick is beaten with a pick to the required size, here you need to look at the situation. The surface is covered with a layer of mortar, a corner is placed on the corner, level it with a spatula to achieve best result. When the surface dries, it can be slightly moistened and leveled with a foam float, so the plane will become almost perfect.

    At this point the process is over, our threshold is ready, I will tell you below how it can be finished.

    Method 2 – filling the threshold with solution

    The device of this type of design differs from the one described above. It is suitable for cases where the level needs to be raised, but the height smaller size bricks Honestly, I use this option almost always when I need to raise the plane; I find it simpler and faster.

    To work we need the following:

    • Cement-sand mixture brand M-150, it is very convenient for pouring screeds and it is inexpensive - about 100 rubles for a 50-kilogram bag;

    • To construct the formwork, we need a board of the required height, 25 mm thick, its length should be slightly larger than the width of the opening in which we will fill the threshold.

    The tools you need are a container for stirring the solution, a spatula and a grater for final leveling.

    The work is carried out according to the following scheme:

    • First of all, you need to clean the base from dirt and cut off the mounting foam if it sticks out. There is no need to beat off protruding areas; if the surface is very crumbly, you can walk over it with a primer;

    • Then you need to install the formwork, the board is simply pressed tightly against the wall and fixed with any heavy object - a tile, a bag of mixture, etc.;
    • The solution is prepared as indicated on the package; its consistency, in fact, is not important, but you should not add a lot of water, as the mixture will turn out to be too liquid;
    • If the layer of mortar is thick, then stones, broken bricks, crushed stone or concrete chips are placed in the cavity. The layer should not be higher than the level of the future threshold; if the thickness of the fill is small, then you can do without filler;
    • The solution is poured carefully so that it fills the entire volume and reaches the level we require. The surface is leveled with a spatula, and excess composition, if any, is also removed;

    • After the surface has dried (in an hour or two), you need to moisten it and rub it with a grater., so you get a flat surface, the side that is adjacent to the board, and so it will be smooth.

    Again, I’ll tell you about the finishing below.

    Method 3 – threshold from a plastic window sill

    This option is good for its simplicity and low cost. But there is one important nuance: if the window sill is of poor quality, it will quickly break when people move around, and you will have to replace it. But if you buy a good option, there will be no problems.

    To work we need the following:

    • Plastic window sill of the required length and width;
    • Polyurethane foam for gluing the element;
    • Sealant for filling joints;
    • End plates for side faces;
    • Blocks for stops (if necessary).

    A plastic threshold from a window sill is made as follows:

    • The base is cleaned of dust and dirt, excess foam is cut off;
    • The opening is measured and the window sill is cut according to the profile we need.. Do not cut too much at once, it is better to fit the element as accurately as possible, it is undesirable to make mistakes;
    • The element is tried on, you need to determine to what height it needs to be raised; if the difference is small, then you can put the threshold on foam, but if the height is more than 1 cm, then it is better to place bars or plastic plates under the structure at the required level;

    • Then polyurethane foam is applied in an even layer; there is no need to put too much of it, as it expands during polymerization and can lift our structure. The threshold is carefully glued to the surface and pressed with a weight to hold it in the desired position;

    • After the foam has hardened, it is worth inspecting our structure; if there are cracks at the joints, then they need to be sealed with white silicone, it will protect the space under the threshold from moisture. The ends are closed with special plugs, and the work is completed.

    On the Internet, I often saw advice to screw the threshold with self-tapping screws, in my opinion, this is at least frivolous: there is simply nowhere to screw in the hardware, concrete is not the best base for them. And I have no doubts about the strength of the fastening without self-tapping screws.

    Method 4 - constructing a wooden threshold

    This option is good in the appropriate setting, if you have wooden trim or the room is decorated in a rustic style and other similar trends. To work we need the following:

    • Board or other wooden elements for constructing a threshold;
    • A couple of bars to create a base for the threshold.

    Let's figure out how to install such a structure:

    • First of all, as always, the base is cleaned and all unnecessary is removed;
    • Next, you need to build a frame, it is made from bars of a tedious height; if necessary, they can be trimmed or, conversely, slats can be placed under them to create a flat plane at the level we require;
    • Using a hammer drill, holes are drilled in the base and block, into which quick-installation dowels of the required length are then inserted and screws are driven in to secure the structure. It should be smooth solid foundation under the future threshold;
    • Next, our board for the threshold is placed; it can be fixed around the perimeter with screws or nails. In the future, all joints will be covered with a wooden corner and no fasteners will be visible. The easiest way to glue corners is with liquid nails;

    • You can assemble a balcony threshold from clapboard; to do this, it is cut into pieces of the required length and attached to the groove. After installation is completed, the outer corner is glued or nailed with finishing nails;

    • Naturally, wood needs protection from moisture and abrasion. Surface in mandatory it is treated with an antiseptic composition, after which varnish is applied to it, it all depends on your wishes. The compositions must be wear-resistant; the threshold must be painted at least twice.

    Threshold finishing options

    Of the options we reviewed, two provide an excellent final result, and two act as a base on which to lay the coating. Let's figure out how to finish a threshold on a balcony using brick and mortar with your own hands. The first option is to use ceramic tiles; this material is characterized by the highest strength and wear resistance, which means it is excellent for our purposes.

    The technology for carrying out the work is as follows:

    • Since our plane is prepared and primed, we can immediately begin measuring. You need to calculate how the tiles will be positioned. It should lie symmetrically, that is, it should not look like a whole piece is laid on one side and half on the other; arrange the elements evenly, it looks much better;

    • Ceramics are cut using a tile cutter or grinder with a concrete disc. It is important to take careful measurements so that the elements lie evenly;

    • The tiles are placed on a special adhesive, which is applied with a notched trowel. So that the seams are same size, you need to insert spacer crosses into them. Control the plane using a level; all elements must lie flat;
    • You can also tile the wall under the threshold, it all depends on your wishes, the work here is carried out in the same way. For strength, can be inserted into gusset a special element, but this is not necessary if you have a smooth joint;

    For the threshold, choose tiles with a structured surface; smooth ceramics are extremely undesirable, as you can very easily slip on them.

    • After the adhesive composition has hardened, its excess is removed, and the seams are filled with fugue; it makes the appearance of the threshold neater and protects the base from water penetration.

    The second finishing option is a laminate threshold; it is quite simple to implement and therefore popular these days. The technology of work is as follows:

    • Measurements are taken and the required piece of laminate is cut out; most often, one strip is enough, especially since they come in different widths and you can pick up optimal solution. You can cut the material with a fine-toothed wood hacksaw or a metal hacksaw, but if you have a jigsaw, the process will be even easier;

    • The finished piece is tried on, if everything is fine, then liquid nails are applied to its back side, after which the element is pressed tightly to the surface. The instructions on the package will tell you the correct use of the composition;
    • IN last resort The corner is attached to the step, they are sold in hardware stores, and you just need to cut a piece of the required width.

    I’ll tell you about one more solution - finishing the threshold on the balcony with linoleum. This material is inexpensive, especially since you can buy a piece from waste. The work is done like this:

    • A piece of material is applied to the surface, after which the lines along which it will be cut are marked; try to cut the linoleum as carefully as possible so that the joints are without defects;

    • Then the base is lubricated with linoleum glue and the material is pressed into place, level it and press firmly for the best adhesion, Special attention pay attention to the joints;
    • Lastly, a metal corner is attached, which will strengthen the protrusion and prevent damage to the linoleum in this place.

    Conclusion

    The threshold to the balcony should not only be reliable and safe, but also attractive, so be sure to use one of the options described above. The video in this article will help you understand some important nuances even better, and if you suddenly do not understand something, then do not hesitate to ask questions in the comments under this review.

    A balcony threshold connects the main room, bedroom or kitchen to the balcony. the main problem of these rooms is that the transition between them is uneven. Therefore, you should take care to do it correctly for your own convenience.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Before deciding how to properly make a threshold for a balcony, you need to familiarize yourself with all its features. First of all, a correctly arranged exit to the balcony makes the room more beautiful. In addition, the threshold in front of the door to the loggia will serve as additional protection against cold air entering the room. In the same time a balcony threshold will make the transition between two rooms much safer.

    Its disadvantages include the possibility of its deflection, but this is true if it is made of plastic. But this only happens if it is installed incorrectly.

    Kinds

    The balcony threshold can be made from different materials. The main thing is that they can fit into general interior the entire room.

    Laminate

    This material- This is an alternative to many expensive types of wood. However, its service life is not as long as theirs. To extend it a little, the threshold Be sure to always keep it dry. In addition, all joints must be treated with sealant.

    The option with a laminate threshold is best suited for glazed balconies which are heated.

    Tile

    If you make a threshold between rooms from ceramic tiles, you won’t have to change it for very long. After all, such material is considered to be of quite high quality and easy to care for. Besides, you can use tiles. It is thinner and lighter than the previous material, and its price is much lower.

    The disadvantages include the fact that a threshold made from such material will be slippery.

    Plastic

    Another popular material today is plastic. It is very easy to install. But there is also a drawback - the material is short-lived. But during all this time it pleases with the fact that it retains heat perfectly. In addition, using a plastic coating, you can hide all the shortcomings of this transition.

    An advantage for housewives is that the plastic can be washed well and without any problems.

    Cement mortar

    Another type of material that is perfect as a threshold for a balcony is a mortar made of high-quality cement. It hardens quite quickly, and after that it can be repainted in the most suitable shade, or finish with tiles.

    Among the advantages, it is worth noting its durability, and the disadvantages include the rapid fading of paint.

    Brick

    Most often, such material is used where the distance from the door to the floor is quite large. Using a brick you can hide this small gap. If desired, it can be decorated in some way later.

    Finish options

    To know how to make your balcony threshold beautiful, it’s worth considering possible options finishing in more detail.

    Using a brick

    First you need to start preparing the floor. It is necessary to remove all the old and excess coating, then clean everything well. Only then can a layer be applied starting putty to make the surface rough.

    In addition, you can add a small amount of gypsum mixture, which will significantly improve the application of the solution.

    First you need to lay a layer of cement, and then 1 row of brick. It is imperative to take into account that when the tiles are laid on top, a small gap must be left between the balcony door and the brick. After this, you can begin laying the next row of bricks. For alignment it is worth using building level. On last layer brick, you need to apply putty, and when it dries, you can start laying the selected tile.

    Threshold based on cement mortar

    In the case where the height of the transition between the loggia and the adjacent room is very small, you can use high-quality cement mortar as finishing. In addition, the whole process will not take too much time, especially if all the materials are prepared in advance.

    First of all, you need to clear everything of old material and clean the surface well. After this, you need to make formwork from wood, the height and width of which must fully correspond to the dimensions of the threshold. Next, you can start mixing the solution; you can use a special one for this construction mixer. When the mixture is completely ready, it can be poured into the prepared space and smoothed out well.

    When the poured solution has set, after about half an hour, you can dismantle the constructed structure. All uneven seams must be treated with sanding plaster. You can finish the threshold with tiles or simply paint it.

    Made of plastic

    You can decorate the threshold using plastic. This option is especially good if it leads to the balcony. metal-plastic door, moreover, in the color of the threshold. To make a plastic threshold, first you need to clear everything of debris. After this, you need to take measurements and cut a piece of plastic of the required size. Then you need to apply a layer of glue to the old step and attach the threshold. Additionally, it is necessary to install special screws into the wall. Next, everything needs to be filled with construction foam.

    But we must also take into account the fact that it will double, and use it with this in mind.. After the foam has set well, you need to check how securely everything turned out. Excess foam must be trimmed off using special knife. The corners can also be further decorated. To do this, you should buy special corners at a hardware store.

    Wooden threshold

    First you need to make a frame from a wooden beam according to the size of the threshold. All sizes can be adjusted on site. To make the case more durable, it must be strengthened not only with self-tapping screws, but also with metal plates. Holes must be made in the corners so that the prepared threshold can be firmly secured.

    When the structure is completely installed, you can close it using chipboard. To do this, you need to cut a piece of the required size from the sheet and secure it with self-tapping screws. As a result, the finished threshold It is recommended to varnish.

    Threshold from the window sill

    Very often, to go to a balcony or loggia, decoration is made from plastic window sill. To do this, you need to install support blocks made of wooden beams. In this case, the tree must first be treated with a special antiseptic. After this, you can install the plastic step. If there are any gaps left, they must be sealed using polyurethane foam or silicone sealant.

    The ends of the threshold must be closed using special plugs.

    Using tiles

    This is another one suitable option For modern apartments.It is best to lay the tiles on the finished threshold. First you need to take measurements. It is worth considering that the tiles should lie symmetrically and evenly. The necessary pieces can be cut using a grinder or a special tile cutter.

    A layer of special glue must be applied to a flat surface. This can be done using a notched trowel. In this case, it is imperative to ensure that all seams are identical and even. For control measurements, you can use a building level. In addition to the threshold, you can also tile the wall above it.

    When the glue has completely hardened, all excess must be removed and the seams sealed with a fugue. This will make the threshold more beautiful.

    When choosing a tile for yourself, you need to choose one so that it is impossible to slip on it.

    Using laminate

    Great alternative wooden coverings will become laminate products. Most often, one strip of laminate is enough to finish the steps. After all, their width can be easily adjusted. You can cut the desired piece of this material using a hacksaw with fine teeth. If possible, you can also use a jigsaw. The cut piece needs to be checked again and then glue needs to be applied to it. It is best to use liquid nails.

    After this, the laminate must be pressed tightly to the surface of the step. When the glue dries, you can attach a corner of the desired width.

    Using linoleum

    First you need to take measurements and then cut out the desired piece of linoleum. After this, its entire base must be coated with special glue and pressed well to the step. At the end you need to attach a metal corner, which can prevent any damage to the linoleum at the joints.

    Beautiful examples

    Let's consider several options for a beautiful threshold to the balcony.
